Slow Uploads?

I have a standard account, and it seems over the last week or two that my uploads have gotten really slow. I generally use Omar's "send to smugmug" (latest version). Is there a way I can figure out what my upload speed should be based on connection tests?

Thanks

    Hi Gary,

Yes. Please do the line quality test, on www.dslreports.com and report the results here. We'll help. You must register there, but it is free.

Looks pretty good, what size files are you uploading?

Between 300kb and 800kb. I just uploaded one sized 368kb that took 1:40. Am I correct in assuming that a 368kbps connection should deliver the file in 1 sec?

Nope, sadly, they don't measure bandwidth/communication rate (technically not identical, but close enough for here) and memory/hard drive space the same way. Bandwidth/ communication speed is measured usually in BITS per second (Kilo-bits-per-second = Kbps) whereas file size is in BYTES (Kilo-Bytes). Since 1 BYTE is made of 8 BITS, you have to divide your rate (368 Kbps) by 8 to get your throughput in bytes... so 368 Kbits/second = 46 KBytes/second so an 800KB file would take a minimum of 17.4 seconds (ignoring overhead, noise on the line, etc.). Granted, it still shouldn't take a minute and a half -- but its not quite as fast as 1 second.

Thanks for the education. Looks like I was bit by the bytes.....:D

Thought I would run a trace route - don't know what it means.

    I just did a 913K upload that took 11 minutes 41 seconds .........

    uploads very slow
I have followed the threads regarding the performance issues with Amazon, but didn't see anything specifcly related to uploads. Mine are still creeping along, and I'm wondering if I need to be doing something other than just waiting for the "fix".

    Thanks

    same problem here.
I'm having the same problem. The uploads are super slow (files sizes between 1-2 mb) from different pc's and different networks, using sendtosmugmug, old faithful and drag and drop.

I keep getting kicked out in the process. It's taking me a whole day to get one wedding uploaded (and the rest).

This never used to happen and neither my equipment, method, files size or service provider has changed. I used to just be able to use STSM and it was fine.

I'm now running the quality test and will report back the findings.

I've spent since last Satuday trying to get 3 weddings uploaded and I'm starting to get rather fed up. They'll go up about 5 at a time and even then it sometimes crashes. :bash

I think I found my problem - and I think it is with sendtosmugmug / .net framework. I had both .net framework 1.1 and 2.0 installed on my computer (I don't know why - it was just there). I uninstalled 1.1 and sendtosmugmug, rebooted and reinstalled sendtosmugmug. I haven't done extensive testing, but the speed looks much better. Laughing.gif

I'm not positve, but I think my problem started about the time I upgraded to the latest version of STSM.
