What makes a photo popular?

I know about photorank... my question is a bit deeper.

Looking at today's popular photos, I see some that are really stunning, but some others that are photos of people on bday party, flash illuminated, red eye and everything. Mostly they are in a sequence.

How are they there? What people do to make their photos popular?

Maybe it's because people don't solely judge a photo based on technical merit (espescially non-photographers).ne_nau.gif

    Concerned about "popular" gallery process
Hello all, it's 1:30 am and I'm still at it...

I had a customer who ranked a few shots as popular. They are now in my "popular" gallery. I had the idea to link that gallery and put a few more in there. Now I can't seem to figure out how my customer did that! Sigh.

Do I have this ranking process disabled? Thanks in advance for your help!

In each gallery customization there's a photorank button you can toggle on
and off. Then on each photo the green and red thumbs should appear in the
    upper right.
Is this what your looking for?

Thanks Allen! It seems as if even when the gallery photorank option is turned on it doesn't work in slideshow mode, which is what I was using. Not sure if there is a way to use both slideshow view & photorank...

No problem, Andy, I've got lots else to work on. By the way, here is a shot I took last month or so after being inspired by your "graffiti" gallery. It was in a covered bridge in a remote corner of Lancaster County:

After Jeff's comment and attempt to hijack the thread :D, I checked Andy's grafitty gallery and they are (as usual) very nice pictures. Very modest graffity though. I found some more aggressive grafitty near home:
