Another bridge

I didn't want to tread on pathfinder's covered bridge thread, so here's the only decent shot I have of one. Finally processed it tonight, was taken last summer in Missouri.

I shouldn't really post this one, since it's rubbish - hack job Photoshopping it, and I was shooting into the sun, had to clone out some CA and flare. Whatever.

What is the idea behind closing over a bridge ?

I used to wonder the same thing. As I understand it, it's to protect the wood from rotting. Water runs down the lower end to supports called 'cords.' On old wooden bridges, they would rot if they got wet often enough... and eventually give way. Covering the bridge protected the cords and made a longer lasting structure.

Where in Missouri? - inquiring minds want to know.... I like all covered bridges - they were also good for sparkin' - if you know my meanin'

Nice, looks like a beautiful place, very peaceful, but then again you could have cropped out a big battery acid factory for all I know!

I'm struggling to remember. We went there at komet's suggestion... the thing has some history.. it was a first of some kind. Maybe komet can help my failing memory.

Nice bridges - Most wooden covered bridges are only one lane - two laned bridges are really special and uncommon - nice pictures.

We have never covered any bridges here in 0z....most are built from gum / ironbark.....there isnt a lot of difference between those timbers & cast iron.

I reckon most places in Oz wouldn't get enough sustained rain for rot. No?

Nice stuff Deacon, I especially like the first one - nice framing. That's one of those deals where, if you had taken another shot to expose for the interior and the shadows, you could have done a Digital Blend in Photoshop. I'm trying to do that now - lots of night shooting at all sorts of exposures.

Not around where i am...we get about 300 sunny days a year here (40 inches/year.)

Up north of me in Tully they get average 170 inches per year with a record year of 443 inches in Bellenden. On our property as a kid i remember falls as low as 9 inches/year. People still wonder why i left at 17
