No expert here, but I think the long shot works better than the close-ups. They just look blown out and over saturated. If the action is done on it's own layer amybe reducing the opacity of that layer would help the smaller ones.

For me, the power of the saturation and contrast help convey the power of the message of hopelessness and poverty.
