Rant about the ODD weather!

It's 10:30am EST Jan 6 and it's 63F here!!(A record)
Not even a inch of snow here on the hill yet this winter.
According to the local weather Dude we are supposed to have a total of 22in for the season thus far!
Just a fair amount of rain.

Apple Trees in Washington Blooming already.....Birds that normally fly south don't know what to do.
Tornado's in New Orleans in Jan?

This is just plain nUtZ I tell ya!!

Nuttiest weather I have ever seen in my 42yrs.
My Mother-In-Law is 82 and lived here all Her life and has never seen this either!

What gives? :scratch
The Gov't playing around with some Top Secret weather machine? :huh

**Not that I'm complaining.....saving a wad on the heat bill and I HATE snow and cold***

My ex's family lived in Yonkers and Brooklyn areas. They use to visit us here in So. Calif. just to escape the harsh winter weather. Guess y'all have your own California sunshine this year! Be greatful....you could live in Denver where they just had their 3rd blizzard!!! :yikes

I remember...
one Christmas we were getting ready to drive out to Long Island and I was in short sleeves, no coat, loading the car. That was probably around the time you were a baby! Everyone looked at me like I was nuts, but it was close to 60 degrees F... who needed a coat?

Now I live where it's usually 50-60 degrees in the winter (during the day) ALL the time! Only this "winter" it's a bit nippy and I'm wearing long sleeved sweat shirts and making sure my windbreaker is always with me.

here no snow this year as it was before ! We went yesterday to hill station which is suppose to be covered completely with snow,but nothing even fall is not completely over yet

All this talk about odd weather got me a little concerned this morning, so I had to go outside and see if we are having our typical winter.

Hmmm.... Shorts, T-shirt, oops forgot the shades!

Still sunny! Got to love the AZ winters!

A few contributing factors.

1/ El Nino - it increases the odds of warmer than normal temps where you live.

2/ Seasonal variability. Things change.

3/ Climate change. The top ten hottest years on record have all happened in the last 15 years. Seasonal averages are being skewed as a result.

I'll take warmer, except is is boring brown yuck. Its Ohio, weather subject to change w/o notice, we can have all 4 seasons in one day.:D

We are on a weather roller coaster here...
Location: Southern California

Date: Friday January 5 - temp at lunch: 48F
Date: Monday January 8 - temp at lunch: 87F

FYI "normal" for January is around 70F

Forecast for tonight January 11 and tomorrow January 12:
Rain (unofficially: possible flurries, as in SNOW), low 29F

If it does come down as snow, it will have to do so at night and it definitely won't stick, the ground is too warm.

It has snowed in SoCal in the past, but it is an extremely rare event.

and snow it did last night. I live near the base of the San Bernardino mtns (right off hwy 330 for those that go up to Big Bear to ski), about 1700 ft. I've been there for 10 yrs and the snow level had gotten down to maybe 2500 ft. Last night, and continuing through this AM, we got about 1.5"! And, even crazier, the snow level went down further in the valley, to about 1000 ft.

We didn't even get a single drop of rain last night in south Orange County. How disappointing is that?

Have fun in the snow. Did you take any pictures?

I'm still waiting for the day when it snows on the beach like it did many decades ago.

Heh. I remember that. It was very surreal having snowball fights that day.

Of course, this weekend being bloody cold, my wife and I had to attack the mess in our garage in preparation for moving. Brr. Did wonders for the "throw-it-out" urge. Just throw it out & we can get back inside where it's warm quicker; the trashman is going to hate us.

interestingly 'we' record the temperature at set weather stations, these stations are normally just outside of cities, That is for two reasons - Out of a city so the heat of the city doesnt affect it( Within a city temp can be measured up to 4 or 5 degrees higher than surrounding area) and near enough the city that the weather guy doesnt have miles to travel.

The fact is to reduce global warming one thing we could do is move the weather stations.

Although in fairness the last couple of years have been warm but no warmer than it has been recorded in the past!

EDIT - look at this graph first from a US gov website sums up the issue very clearly and Briefly as you can see "urban temps have risen and make it look hotter at first glance, but actually the Raw temp shows it was warmer in the 30's and temps now are nothing too out of the ordinary

temp datsa for US comes from USHCN (U.S Historical climatology network) The recommended people for any long term climate analysis.

One of the key references though is R Bohm's "urban bias in temperature time series - a case study for the city of Vienna, Austria" (1998)

Another interesting reference is Stanley A Changons "impacts of the 97-98 El Nino generated weather in the U.S"

A really hard to get but relvant study that pretty much proved the problem a long time ago is"adjusting urban bias in the regional mean surface temperature series of south korea 1968-1999 that was published in 2003 in the international journal of climatology.

I don't find that terribly convincing. For instance:

As pointed out, urban bias is not going to have much of an effect on marine or rural readings, which tend to agree. NASA actually attempts to correct for urban bias

Urban heat bias is also not going to be much of a factor for mountain top glaciers or permafrost. The former tends to be receding nowadays and the latter melting, both of which point to warming.

Oh dont get me wrong Ithings are definately warmer, I do question just how much warmer. But more importantly I do question weather things are Unnaturally warmer! History/archaeology etc shows we have gone through warm and cold cycles since forever and this current warm cycle isnt by any means unique.
