Hybrid Channel Mixer

I read with interest Landrum's post about using channel mixer in a different way, in Karz's thread. So I thought I'd try something other than the standard channel mixer on a shot I made Saturday that I've been struggling with.

I did Chanel Mixer/monochrome adjustments to make the shot look decent.
Then I reduced the Channel Mixer layer to 70% opacity.
Then I did Selective Color/Black +26.

I still have to find a way to reduce the lightness of the drum kit. But I've struggled to do anything with the original shot, which had tons of red in it, so I'm pleased with this preliminary result. I think this technique may also be a way to get something I've wanted for a while: how to get that pastel look of the old, hand-painted postcard photographs.

    Couple of slight adjustments.

Duplicate layer of the original/reduce saturation/decrease Levels/mask in over the shiny bits of the drum kit. Slight reduction in glare.

And I cloned out the mic on the right.
