The Band Plays On...

... usually in poor light, unfortunately. A few shots from last weekend's performance of the Derek Clegg Group. You may remember that I made a poster for the event.

Once again, I struggled with low light and low skill level. I used the fastest lenses I have, down to f1.4 on the 35mm. Intense differences between light and dark. And desperately difficult to get a fast enough shutter speed to get sharp images. Plus, I'm a twit for not maxing out my ISO - I seem to have a mental resistance to going above 1000, even tho it would help me. :doh

Anyway, here's one of my workmate, the bass player.

And one of many I tried of his guitar. You may see more than one version of this, as I search around for the best shot from the ones I saved.

concert shooting (especially small club stuff) is so hard. Those are pretty commendable considering. Keep at it!

And get over that high ISO thing! You've got the big gun, and I know you can deal with it in post!

With a 1DMkll, go on up the ISO 3200 for kicks. You might be surprised. Set the incamera noise reduction to "on" and fire away. And you may need - exposure compensation due to the bright highlights and dark overall field.

    nice shots Sid!

I agree with previous posters, use a little -EC. I haven't done any shooting with the 20D at concerts, but I'm planning on ISO 3200 @ -1 EC I've got a 30cmx45cm print of a D30 @ 1600, I am pretty certain I can get the same result with the 20D with 3200 -1 :D
    Cheers Sid!

Oh, if you want to check some of my D30 shots:

Thanks for the advice, guys. I'll put it to good use.

Michiel, some very nice shots in your gallery, especially this one! That's the kind of sharpness I struggle to get.

Poster turned out well as did the pics.

Maybe sharper would be better but it's a nice look. Really.

Thanks mate, that was a happy accident.

Here's another of what may be many bass guitar efforts.
