Problem creating categories?

I did a search for this and came up empty browsered so...

I want to setup categories on my front page. I go to 'add new category' type in a name etc. and hit 'submit'.

Nothing happens, the new category doesn't appear.

Is there a time lag involved or should this be immediate?
