I have been to this house a few times trying to decide how to approach it .
Today i took my 10-20mm lens and some wireless flash . I've posted a sample of the picture without flash and then with wireless flash to the side ..

And then with flash ...

Don't be shy to tell me how i can do better next time !

Just an Idea: Tripod it up, slow the shutter speed and use the natural light. I think it might look nice. ne_nau.gif

OK , High Dynamic Range through blending multiple exposures , that will have to be my next project when I approach that house , for now I'm trying to master off camera flash with wireless triggers . I have disciplined myself not to rely on ttl and auto flash and just set the power manually and ajdust aperture and speed for correct exposure .... in theory . Once I get that right I will do some "cheating" and HDR the image with 5 shots instead of one ..... [ Don't take offense , I know HDR is a respectable approach but the side of my brain that wants to master flash has turned its nose up at the HDR side ... for now ]

Yeah, I understand. Sorry for steering you away from your focus on leaning flash...hehe

Do you have a flash meter....or are you just guessing at what should the settings be.....

I still use a meter on 99.9% of all of my flash work....un;ess for some reason the meter is left behind and I grabbed the 100' tape measure in stead and decide to calculate by g-number......but still I prefer the flash meter approach.

My first attempt at off camera flash was with the Nikon's cls wireless flash ttl system . I am now trying to follow strobist's advice : Set the flash on half or full power , too dim ? open the aperture , too bright ? close the aperture ..... need more ambient , slower shutter ... though on this shot I metered for the window and fired the flash on full power and never had much time to play with other settings ....

Desmond, I would suggest lowering the power on the flash so that it more closely equals the ambient light comeing in from outside. Possibly diffusing it a bit might help also. I would say to bounce it but black charred wood doesn't reflect light to good

I now have a flash stand and umbrella holder , maybe if I fired it through my white umbrella ?

That would help tremendously. Not only would it diffuse the light, but would spread it over a larger area.

ok I went back with the white umbrella , the 17-50 lens was on at the time . With the sb24 on full power through the white umbrella the light was more diffused but I had to keep the speed down to 1/200th and at that aperture the flash was a bit dim .....

Yes, but unless you are shooting evidence photography where you need every detail, this appears more natural to me. It is not readily apparent that you used an off camera flash and that is the idea.

That's good .But I suppose if I wanted it brighter that would involve an extra flash or one more powerful flash . I took a few shots to "HDR" it but haven't put them together yet , I noticed a huge green flare when I went to longer exposure .

Yes, or you could just cheat and do a levels adjustment. Laughing.gif

I'll let you choose between a silver bullet and a stake through your heart eek7.gifrolleyes1.gif .
I suppose that is an option BUT , I would also like to be able to do it without the help of PS if possible .thumb.gif
