This is the retired battleship USS Wisconsin. Taken while on vacation - made a day trip to Norfolk, VA where this is docked. It's open to the public - just the top deck area. I heard that while it is retired, it's kept in a such a state that it can undocked and put quickly back in service. The tour guide folks even said there were still some Tomahawk missiles stored below...but I don't know how true that is.

It's hard to tell from the wide angle photos, but this ship is massive :)

Ah some nice dramatic composition here.
It looks like a big ship. I just didn't know it was so skinny looking at it from straight on.

neat shots!! the Missouri was docked here in the Seattle area for many years, but has been moved to Hawaii.

the Iowa-class battlewagons were very slender, especially the front third or so. the older Arizona-class ships were broader and blunter - and slower!

I was on the USS New Jersey BB 62 in the Gulf of Tonkin during the Viet Nam War.

I can testify first hand that these ships are huge. When that main battery is fired...it is ear-splitting.

Great shots of this Old Lady! thumb.gif

Great shots! clap.gif I was in Norfolk a few months ago and visited the Wisconsin. Its really is hard to believe how big of a ship it is until you stand on its decks.

For a pretty good write up on the ship, check this out.
