My buddy Bob and I did the rounds of Rice Lake nesting sites today in hopes of finding some osprey chicks that would pose for us. No such luck. However, there were some adults that were very accommodating.

The detail in this one is very nice.thumb.gif

I've only shot Ospreys once and I consider it to be a very difficult subject. Particularly the exposure aspect. Always back-lit with a light color of it's own. When editing shots like this I like to separate the bird from the sky to get a sky blue and a proper exposure compensation on the bird. Shadows tend to be blue so by separating them you can treat each without effecting the other. Hope that made sense.:D

Also, a polarized after effect is sometimes beneficial.

Thanks a lot for looking. I appreciate your comments. Basically, I'm a pretty lazy guy and like to avoid a lot of post processing. I find that as far as exposures are concerned, if I have a blue sky at 90 degrees to the sun, I meter it and open up 2/3 stop as a starting point. I review the first few images and tweak it from there, avoiding blowing the highlights. As far as post processing, I may do some shadow adjustment and then some mild sharpening.

Nice bifs in some harsh light. Am I the only one that can't get an osprey shot? headscratch.gif I saw yet another one down on Lake Travis near Austin before the flood of the century forced me to leave, but still couldn't get a shot.

How many photographers does it take to change a light bulb? 50. One to change the bulb, and forty-nine to say, "I could have done that better!"

Thanks a lot. A lot depends on being in the right place at the right time and being prepared. We are fortunate enough to have a number of nests in the area that we can approach fairly close.

    Quit being lazy! rolleyes1.gif

    Knowing how to process your images will take a 7 and make it a nine.....and a 9 a ten.nod.gif

Anything less than a seven though isn't worth the effort.
