Away from home shoot

I did something for the first time this week...did a shoot w/out scoping out the location first. It was a GREAT spot but I'd have loved to check it out for the sweet spots first. Plus, I had my son w/ me and that made it REALLY hard. My little booger who normally will not sit for me wanted to get in every shot (he's 3). Little stinker! LOL Both kids were cute, but I think the little girl is to die for adorable. She's a spitfire, too! Her mom is in serious trouble in 10 years. LOL

Great job, Jan! I think I would have needed some anti-anxiety meds going to a location sight-unseen! You found some great light and their eyes look wonderful. I also love the bridge shots. Beautiful! clap.gif

Elaine, I always need anti-anxiety meds. rolleyes1.gif I don't take them, but I really think I should. Laughing.gif Ask my husband.

Here's a b/w action on one of the shots. I also warmed up her one close-up of this same shot (it's fixed up above now).

Jan, WOW! you are getting awesome results. going into locations blindly is a definite mental exercise, huh? You did great.

Can you tell me how you're getting such phenomenal results in #3? Her eyes are amazing, and the light on her skin is so even. Are you shooting exclusively at sunset these days? What was the sun's position to you in this shot? Did you use fill flash? It looks *so* gorgeous.

5 and 6 are adorable too. Wonderful job!

Thank you so much for those kind words!

I always shoot starting about and hour or hour and a half before sunset. For #3, and most shots, I have my subjects in the shade with the sun directly behind me, or the place where the sun set directly behind me. It's so easy to get good, even light after the sun goes down but it's still light. The sun was actually still up in #3, but since she was in full shade I still got even light. I only use fill flash when I have backlit pictures, which I don't do all that often. They are not my fave. I use about 99% natural light. This is partially because I don't like flash and how it looks and partially because I don't know how to use it well yet.

You will get the same nice, even light even in the middle of the day if you shoot in your garage w/ your subject facing towards the door.

    Do you shoot raw?

    I love 4, 5, and 6! She's a born model.

    What color was her shirt?

Yes, I always shoot raw, especially w/ kids. I meter once per pose and fix the rest in raw. There isn't time to re-meter nonstop w/ toddlers, at least not for me! Her shirt is white. What color does it look?

    Regarding #3
I love her powerful blue eyes.
Her shirt is blue to borderline magenta in spots and the right side of her face is blue toned.
Compare it to #1 which is not as blue; closest to white by the button on her shirt.
Maybe try and pick the white point custom in raw. May lose the power of the blue eyes if you warm it up though.
