G'Day

I just got back from a week in Katmai NP in Alaska. Had great opportunities and close interaction with the bears. Here are a few photos.

Mom with Cubs, they were very concerned about a big boar that was directly behind us.

This shot is the reason I went to this particular spot in Alaska, I waited 2 days for this shot. But had previsualized it 6 months before I took it.

This is another shot I have been waiting a long time for, had to be vertical.

This was minutes before the biggest storm of the summer....these guys don't look to concerned though.

This bear was close...70mm lens!

Hard to believe but there is seven bears in this photo.

Talk about trust, this sow laid down 15' from us and began to nurse her cubs!

Real nice series of shots Shane. thumb.gif I've not run into any bears out shooting as of yet. Probably have a heart attack if I did. wings.gifrolleyes1.gif

Ok, so I'm kidding. These are really fantastic -- gallery material, all of them. Congratulations, you really brought home the goods.

Those are really great shots. How did you get so close to the bears? I drove to Alaska with my family in '97 and was told if I was a quarter mile from a bear I was too close!

We saw several but none up close and personal like these!

    Cheers

Thanks for all the positive comments. Tuggnet, Where to begin regarding the mythes about getting close to bears. Unfortunately, 95% of the places, or tours that offer bear viewing in Alaska & BC, including McNeil River or Brooks Camp (which are the most popular) have serious restrictions that govern your interactions with the bears....maybe due to liability or an inaccurate understanding of bear biology, not sure which is the case. But the bottom line is you can't get REALLY close to the bears.

There is only one place that I know of that you can get REALLY close, that is on the coast of Katmai National Park. Still then you need a competent guide that will get you close.

My friend is a bear guide in Katmai and can provide such an opportunity to a small group of photographers. He and I will be offering a photo safari next year to a small group of photographers wanting to get up close and personal with the largest carnivores on the planet. Watch my website, (under Workshops) over the next couple of months if this is something you may be interested in participating in.

    Thanks Shane
