Aperture questions

So I have a question. I just took this picture to test aperture on my camera. I wanted to get the entire bottle in focus, but I was unable to do it. Does anyone have a better suggestion to try to get the whole thing in focus?

    You could try a smaller aperture and slower shutter speed. If you're already at the smallest aperture then try moving back and zooming in.

    You are going to need a tripod to get the whole bottle in focus. You need to be at a much smaller aperture, say f/22 or so. This will make your shutter speed very slow, too slow to hand hold. You could bump up your ISO , but I suspect that you will still not be able to hand hold the shot.

    Well.....now its easy, just crank up the f/number and leave it at ISO 100. BTW, focusing about 1/3 of the way down the bottle should make is easier to get the whole thing is focus. Hyperfocal distance or some such thing :): .

    LIttle different White Balance, but you get the idea... That seemed to work great! This one was shot at f/22

    Seriously, the second is far better at reaching your goal of having the
    entire bottle in focus.

    So how did it taste?

    Is the top of the bottle too close to the lens to be in focus?

    yeah... my tripod doesnt go up any higher than that, and I didn't want to place the bottle somewhere else (lazy). I was using a 28-200mm lens, so I could have backed off and zoomed... but mainly I was bored and wanting to understand aperture :)


    P.S. The bottle tasted GREAT! Pear Brandy, Gran Marnier and a splash of sweet & sour. Is there laws about "shooting under the influence"?

    Looks good :D

    One thing to remember about aperture, sometimes you can't have it all :): it's hard to get broad DOF at close range, or even when zoomed in at a distance. You might want to look for a DOF calculator on google, that'll give you some insight in advance about the DOF you can expect!
    Cool shot, and erm, shooting under influence is okay, as long as you have a supervisor at hand :lol
