Weekly Assignment #53: 5-3-1

This week (actually, two weeks - I'm off to Smugmug shootout next week, so this class is gonna be a bit longer) is two-prong. One one hand, it may help to facilitate Yuri's MA#2, on the other hand it was inspired bu some material we learned from Shay in San Diego.

The goal is to have five different portraits of the same person in three minutes time and in one location. Obviously, no time to change clothing or to move far. Your friends are: vantage points, angles, a focal length and a continuous drive.

Try to find a location that would provide a different background and hopefully a different character if viewed from different directions.
Try high, try low, go around, go far, go close, go left, go right, rotate or repose the model, use the wide angle, use telephoto, take a head shot, an upper body, a full height...

Remember: once you take the first shot, you only got 3 minutes to produce 5 high quality portraits.

Use the burst/drive: your model may blink, facial expression may change. One shot may miss it, two or three will almost surely catch it. You need to talk to your model, direct him/her, and most importantly, give him/her a feedback.

Your entry should consist of 5 portraits, each with a time stamp in the caption (plus EXIF link). You can do multiple entries of 5, thus changing a location or a model.

Let's get some portraits!
"May the f/stop be with you!"

    Ouch,
    That hurts...eek7.gif
    No entries? headscratch.gif
Is it too difficult to get a model? ne_nau.gif
Dogs will do, too if you don't have a cooperative family member... mwink.gif
Come on, guys and gals, let's try something new rather than buildings and landscapes.
    Portrait photography IS fun. deal.gif

Sometimes people say Yes because they don't want to say No.
They are afraid to be unkind.

When this happens they call you back the day before and say:

I'll call you and we will be doing the shoot some day !

It's a shame but it was what happened to me. rolleyes1.gif

I know I will do this assignment some day. May be not following those 3 minutes time because I don't like them, but I will do the shooting.

I only need to get the chance !

It' hard to find a model. mwink.gif

Next Friday (tomorrow for me), Saturday and Sunday there is a flickr meeting in Lisbon.

I will be there on the second day, Saturday, and sincerely hope to get the necessary shots for this assignment.

I am not so happy now because my son is 250 kms away and he took my 20D with him...ne_nau.gif

I will be shooting with the 350 D.

I will show you my work from that day. :D

Actually, it is Friday already ! :Deek7.gif

Yes it's not the camera. But a good one helps a lot ! mwink.gif

Don't blame the camera blame yourself (when the shot is lauzy). I read this somewhere.

I don't think quite that way.

There is a share: part to the camera, part to the shooter.

One generaly doesn't get a super photo with a trivial camera. rolleyes1.gif

Try to freeze an action with a basic model where you can't set speed or aperture. eek7.gif

I'll do my best that is for sure ! thumb.gif

You work with your gear, not against it.
If the camera can't stop an action - catch the motion blur and make it important.

    Thank you for trying!

However, I'd like to draw your attention to this little portion of the lead post:
    ...five different portraits...

It was NOT an exercise in simply shooting in continous drive mode...

Please check out Felicia's 2d try, that was pretty much spot on thumb.gif

If you show something like this to a perspective customer, who's most likely incapable of telling DOF from ISO, you'll be asked why are you trying to sell him five nearly identical pictures... deal.gif
Something less subtle next time, maybe? mwink.gif

    First I don't have customers. Will I ever ?
I don't see/practize photography under that point of view.
I do it because I like it and I have fun with. But I like to be liked ! :D

Second if I had customers, they would have the change to choose the one they would like best from all the 5 pictures.

I think that is what the young couple is going to do.
