Re: garage box: it's a combo of a F/O modem, UPS, TV, Internet and Phone, all mashed up together...
Got to ask. What does this cost a month?
My sister-in-law, in Atlanta, has fiber to her house and didn't even realize how great she had it. Cost her like $30 a month. When I plugged in the work computer and fired up Outlook, over VPN, it was like I was sitting in my cube, but of course with a southern accent.
Pheh - less than 50 miles...I just got this going cross country!
Plain old vanilla Cox Cable
That said, I will be switching to FiOS as soon as it is available to me. It costs MUCH less for the same services as far as I can tell. Like $96/month for phone, internet and TV.
Just ran my own test and got 2301 kb/s download and 309 kb/s upload. It tested it from my house to smugmug.net Second test got me 3701/315. If i keep doing it will it get as fast as Nikolai?:ivar
Comcast Cable doesn't rock like Cox Communications or Verizon.
One street over (ChrisP6) and I could have DSL, which is 2x for the same price. :

I'm jealous. Verizon doesn't have FiOS in my area yet. I've been waiting patiently.
