  Smooth to me implies not only to the physical appearance of surface uniformity but also to the sense of touch. In option 1, the drive is so bright that it seems to have no texture at all. The second one implies the texture I'd think of. The ones of the motorcycle engine just don't imply "smooth" to me, but I know that this is a personal subject!

  I agree....and Harley engines are very smooth...when they are not running....
