Anyone got any scoop on the new 5d that I heard was going to be announced?

I may be in the market and I'm wondering if I should hold my horses for something better depending on what it really has. :dunno

It may be announced at the PMA which is from 1/31-2/2 so it may be worth waiting till the end of PMA to see if they announce it.
The next time they tend to announce new stuff is in the fall/August.

5d?? headscratch.gif
dunno
He was asking about the Canon 5D. There has been a lot of rumor and conjecture on the boards about the possibility that Canon is planning to announce a replacement for the venerable Canon 5D.

Laughing.gif yea I meant the Canon 5D. I didn't know there was another 5d out there rolleyes1.gif

I'd sure like to hear the announcment. I'm going to be an unhappy camper when I purchase a 5d and a new one comes out the next week dropping the price of the one I purchased.

Darn, it's "venerable" now, lol ... kind of like middle age ... seems like just yesterday he was born and i brought him home all spanking new, changed his batteries, wiped his sensor, fed him all the best cards ... sigh, they grow up so fast and then you're just not cool anymore, just like his older brother Spotmatic ... I lost track of him years ago, you know the story ... he moved to Caifornia, joined a band and we never heard from him again.

I used "venerable" in the traditional Chinese sense of the word: "respected, esteemed, honored, revered, and admired". :D <img src="https://us.v-cdn.net/6029383/emoji/mwink.gif" border="0" alt="" > <img src="https://us.v-cdn.net/6029383/emoji/clap.gif" border="0" alt="" > <img src="https://us.v-cdn.net/6029383/emoji/thumb.gif" border="0" alt="" >

From my experience, the model that is being replaced does not drop by too much after the announcement. It seems that it's price drops a bit just before the announcement as maybe the stores are trying to clear out their inventory to make room or something.

If it was me, I'd wait at least till the PMA is over to see if there is a 5D Mark II being announced or not. I don't think there will be some dramatic drops in the 5D's price though in the near future as it's about as low as it's ever been.

The latest rumor is that Canon will anouce a camera that directly
targets the Nikon D300 and not a 5D replacement. Possibly a 3D
with 45 Point AF? Rumors are fun to read. Other sites have suggested
that the 5D upgrade is due in Fall at Photokina .. who knows. Links:

Wppi
Last year I was at WPPI and they were touting the MkIII to the wedding and portrait photograhers. Maybe the will break tradition and annouce it at the WPPI show in Las Vegas in March. Seems that is the intended market and there will be over 10,000 wedding/portrait people at the show.

I don't understand why people are so convinced there will be a 5D replacment. What changes could be made that are not already available in current models? You want more resolution, Then the 1D, Faster ,one of the other 1Ds, live view, then the 40D.

I see Cannon, for the most part, sticking to the current line up and recouping the research that it took to get to this place. I would bet they are working on a new generation of cameras that will owe less to the film bodies of the past. And possibly some new breakthrough sensor technologies. Probably require a new type of lens not compatable with the current line up.

They would love for you to have to get ALL NEW GEAR to stay on the cutting edge. These companys were forced into digital cameras that were compatable with film camera lenses, flashes, bags and the like. Don't expect this to continue!

It makes perfect sense to me. Basically the new 5D will I think be just like the 40D only full frame. As it is, the 5D misses out on weatherproofing and speed.

Ditto.

BTW- last I heard, this won't happen until Photokina.

I think most people are looking for a digital version of the EOS 3- think faster fps, weather sealing, 45-point AF, and wider dynamic range. One of the problems with Canon is that they try not to cannibalize their 1-series models by having features that are in those cameras be in the lower-end ones.
