OK i'm strugling a bit with progressing with macro at the mo :dunno , looking for new things and hitting a bit of a technical wall, I only have the onboard flash on the D40 but the lens is great (Sigma 50mm macro) any tips are greatfuly recieved

Very clever unique shot. I like it. I am glad there were a few holes without water stuck in them. Very interesting.

Well, I suspect one of the things you're talking about is getting light where you want it, if using on-board flash?

Assuming getting a flash unit isn't possible atm (tho' v. highly recommended) there's many different ways that ppl have approached this topic - doing a google search will produce some weird and wonderful stuff

(I don't use this any more as now use off-cam flash - but have used this with a beam splitter using similar 'technology'

There's a lot of scope (imo) if you're prepared to do some messing around ... and have a good supply of glue / card / plastic / ali foil / tape etc

Thanks for the comment Brian, and the offer of advice. It was more of a call for critisism of the shot from a technical (Or any!) POV to be honest. I had no replies at all on the last Pic I posted and its difficult to know just what makes a macro capture technicaly bad (apart from the focus and DOF).

Ah - I see - sometimes people don't reply to a post if they just don't find the subject interesting- for example your shot above was borderline for interesting to me. I suspect a different angle on it could make it more interesting but that's just me.
Primarily you are trying to take photos to please yourself not other people (hopefully you may be able to do both). So you need to be able to disengage from the photo being yours, pretend it's someone else's and then ask yourself what you like and dislike about the photo and what can be better.

Well, glad it was of some use, because (like Brian) I wasn't really sure what you were after ... but found such 'messings about' illuminating (sorry!)

(Essentially part of a dastardly plan to get kitchen tables covered with DIY materials and swmbo complaining about the ali foil that's 'disappeared' ... )
