New Skiing pictures - this time from ... UTAH!

Went on a road trip to Utah and skied Alta, Solitude, and Brighton last week. It was the absolutely craziest week of my life as far as skiing goes, it would simply not stop snowing and we had at least 1-3 FEET of new snow every morning...

#7 is the clear stand out shot for me.

Last one with the sequence is very cool but to small.

Those are some nice shots, but they're all lacking contrast and pop, plus the snow is a dirty gray. Try running them through the Pop tutorial, linked in the Tutorials in my signature or up in the dgrin navbar.

Pics 4-11, 24-27 make it look like you guys are buried waist-deep in powder. Love the sequence shot of the last one (#37).

Could someone please comment on the sharpness of these pictures? I'm really really paranoid about sharpness, I'm always worried that "I just don't get it", you know... I'm also worried that the lack of sharpness might come from hardware defects.

Great shots! What are you shooting with? It would be great if you could get some series of shots off of the cliffs! Of course you would need a pretty fast camera.

Looking at your pics is almost too much, I can't wait to get out and do some skiing myself this weekend, almost all last week the road to my local ski area was closed due to high avalanche danger.:cry

6 feet of snow in the last 6 days with 2 more feet expected in the next two days!

! Yeah, it's been a crazy 2 months with lots and lots of snow, lots of skiing, and lots of fun!

I'm shooting a Canon 20D with 24-70/2.8L and 70-200/2.8L lenses...(6fps should be plenty fast for a cliff-series, I'll try next time!)
I'll edit my initial post to say which shot was taken with what lens & settings...

I miss skiing so much.
My knees are ruined though from skiing in college. Never made it out to Utah though. Looks like the conditions were ideal. Nice series

Once you get a taste of the Utah POW POW you can never ski anything else...I ski bummed in Utah for a few years...then, move to Alaska and the snow and terrain was so inferior to Utah pow....yea, you see all the extreme skiing out in the Chugach...but, never the TRUE POW of Utah. THE GREATEST SNOW ON EARTH.

Great series of shots.

I got to ski Utah in January, for the first time. It was cooolllldddd! Compared to what you did, I was on the training slopes. I'm envious of this type of skiing, but I still think your crazy as a bunch of squirrels crossing a 6-lane highway during rush hour.

I've been shooting skiing mostly in Colorado before going to Utah. I was shoting Loveland Pass / Ski Area, Vail Pass, East Vail ... ALL of those locations where by far the coldest I've shot at, ever. Constant 0 to -10F shooting conditions. My strategy for the cold (had to learn it the hard way!) was to have 3 spare battery packs with me, and to keep those spare packs in an internal pocket very near my stomach, underneath all my layers & down coat.
I would still have to change batteries every about 200 shots ...

... That said, Utah was nowhere near those temperatures, and despite using the same strategy just in case, I survived on ONE battery pack (without recharging!!!) for the entire week I was there and about 1000 shots!

Any tips on keeping your camera safe and moisture free when taking it along on days like that?

That looks amazing, I snowboard and I can really appreciate that powder and those drops, thats awesome and I am extremely jealous as of now

But bottom line those shots are gorgeous, I loved every single one and really liked the sequence of the front flip in the last one.
One question though, how did you keep your camera dry? Ive always wanted to take my camera up snowboarding to take pictures but am always afraid I will wreck my camera. How did you keep yours dry and safe while skiing and while shooting?
