The Salton Sea

Hello to everyone,

Is it okay to link to my Smugmug gallery instead of painstakingly reposting my pics here?

I recently visited southern California and as I am alway intruigued by the odd and weird, I just had to take a drive out to the Salton Sea. I became even more fascinated once I got there, this is definitely lens fodder for me :D.

Maybe the individual pics aren't always that strong, but I tried my best to convey a sense of place. How did I do? There are comments underneath every pic, you might have to scroll down a bit to read them.

Here you go:

I like quite a few of your shots. The gate to nowhere has a dark feel to it. I live about an hour from there, i'm gonna have to go shoot there too!

Thanks for looking, Exploderpilot! Yes, the area is quite intriguing! If you only live an hour away, it's definitively worth the trip. Great for bird shots too, although that's not really my thing. But go during the cooler months, in the summer the smell is supposedly unbearable.

Oh yeah it's pretty bad. I go offroading an awful lot right across the highway there. It's called truckhaven, and even camped a mile or two from the water, you can still smell it. That's why salton city never took off as the tourist spot the original delopers saw when they bought it!

Thanks for the pics and captions. My granpd parents own a fair amount of property at Salton Sea. They grew up here but live in Michigan. My grandpa loves the heat so every other spring and summer they pack up their motorhome and go to the Salton Sea.

When I lived in LA I would go there all the time to visit them. Since I moved up north, 15 years ago, I haven't been back. Looks like it hasn't changed that muchrolleyes1.gif . One of these years before it's too late I 'm going to go back to visit and this time I will bring my camera.

You definitely got it with the shot of the pelican pairs and the layers of mountains in the background. Wonderful series. I should try to visit the place one of these days. It'd be a 3-hour drive one way.

Thanks for the visit. I lived in the area for 10 years there are so many locations in the Coachella valley that I want to revisit since I have picked up the camera.

Sorry Ian, I figured I probably broke the rules. I just looked at my pics again and simply can't decide which ones I'd want to post, because for me it was more about the overall feel of the place. Please, feel free to move this if it is inappropriate here ne_nau.gif.

Everyone, thanks for looking and your comments! To all who live nearby or visit occasionally, I'd love to see your shots - it's such a cool area for pics, I think...
