watermark background isn't transparent

I am selecting transparent per instructions when trying to create a watermark and following instructions ( Ithink) , saved as .png.but when I upload it still is a big white rectangle with my text on it and when used as watermark, of course, the white background is still there. Whats wrong?

Using Photoshop elements 6. What I have uploaded is in gallery entitled 'hidden'. Have uploaded about 6 versions all same problem, only one remains in that gallery.

Well, your watermark image is not transparent. I am not familiar with Elements so I created a png file in Photoshop that you can use. The text is black and the background is transparent. Using the opacity setting in SmugMug you can fade the black text as you see fit.

Click here for the original file. Right-click to save and then upload to your account.

thanks but.... I right clicked opened in PS 6, adjusted the opacity to 53% but the big white rectangle is still there. ???

No need to do that - you have now uploaded a jpg file which does not support transparent backgrounds. Upload the original png file to your gallery and use that for your watermark.

If you adjust the opacity in SmugMug then the black text will fade to be like grey.

That image is not a transparent png. It is a jpg.
Please post in finishing school forum here on Dgrin if you need assistance with your PSE, or the tutorial, thanks!

Thanks Andy and David. Files saved as jpg or psd regardless of what I told it. So I reopened one, saved again as .png and voila, its there. THANKS for your help. Mark
