Custom domain name

Hello,

Where does the "@" go in the custom name setting? It's not very clear. I put in the in the custom name field but I get an error. I tried again with www.borealphoto.com and got another error saying it doesn't point to Smugmug. I suppose that's because the change from my registar was made minutes ago. I this right?

Where does the @ go?

All you need to do is add your domain name to your SmugMug account as is: www.borealphoto.com

Then at the company where you have the domain name registered the @ will be used in 'host' field for an A-Record. We have a help page showing the settings here: http://www.smugmug.com/help/professional-accounts

Thanks Rich. It's not clear at all on the custom name page.

If you just want your web address to be http://yourdomain.com instead of something like http://www.yourdomain.com, you can use the symbol instead of inserting the subdomain when setting it up.

This sounds like I'd have to enter @.borealphoto.com in the custom hostname field.

Hi Erick, the @ isn't used on the SmugMug domain field in your control panel, it's used on your Domain Host. For example, for godaddy.com, it looks like this:

Your domain host might be different, we can help

and more help,here:
http://www.smugmug.com/help/professional-accounts

The only thing that ever goes in the SmugMug domain field is www.yourdomain.com or if you are using a subdomain, then it'd be something like photos.yourdomain.com or gallery.yourdomain.com

Thanks Andy. I understood from Rich's answer. I don't have anything like this on my domain page (only DNS, redirection) I have to ask them. I replied here to say it's not clear on the Smugmug page. It reinforces my idea that SM goes out of its way to make things complicated.

Hi Erick, ouch, yes indeed, Domain stuff can be complicated. In fact, we have something in the works RIGHT NOW that's making this whole process a thousand times easier

I can promise you though, as much as you may feel it, we truly don't go out of our way to make things hard. We'll try and do better, though, I promise. This feedback is like GOLD to us and I thank you for it!

Hi Erick,

Sorry you're having trouble. We do our best to give specific instructions and screenshots for the whole process, but with so many different domain registrars out there, all with their own way of doing things (some use @, some use *, some don't have either and you get what they give you), it can be tough. Can you let us know who your domain is registered with? (GoDaddy, Joker, other). I did a nslookup on the domain and it's listed with Tucows, who is a domain wholesaler only, so your domain controls are with someone else. Enom.com maybe?

I don't have any problem with my domain. They've already made the change. I only have to wait a day to spread out. My problem was with the Smugmug page that says:

Don't add http:// or any / marks. Just type www.yourdomain.com (or photos.yourdomain.com, for example, if you set it up that way). Please use lower-case!

With a big a big capture of the custom name page that says "Change your settings" on top. It sounds like the @ goes in the custom name on the Smugmug page.

My question was about that @ and it was quickly answered. My real gripe is with the Smugmug way. Nothing is simple. This was actually pretty simple. There's a lot worse.

We're actually changing this page RIGHT now and will have a newer version with a bonus goody out soon, we hope
