What's happening? Is it just me? Each time I click on anything in my (pro) Smugmug site I get a 'link' at the bottom reading 'cdn.smugmug.com' and nothing happens for a looooooooooong time. Eventually my album is showing.... any ideas??? :scratch

    Hi guys,

Sorry you're experiencing some hanging. First, can you let us know what ISP you have, and what part of the country you're in? Occasionally we see isolated troubles with certain ISPs/locations.

Could you run a speed test for us?

    Go here:
    http://smugmug.speedtest.net

We are the Yellow San Jose pyramid. Please let us know what the results are.

It'd also be super helpful if we could get a trace route from you. Try these instructions to run a traceroute on a PC: http://www.smugmug.com/gallery/2959046 This is from you to SmugMug.

    Also, Go here:
http://www.smugmug.com/homepage/traceroute.mg This is from SmugMug to you.

Feel free to send the results to us at the help desk if you're sensitive about revealing your IP.

E-mail sent to Help@smugmug.com. I am based in Europe. Thanks Steve.

Oh, my ISP is Multikabel (also names 'Ziggo' now I believe) and has been for years. Cable connection.. other sites don't show any problems, just Smugmug.

    Maybe I 'filled the server' ?? rolleyes1.gif

Very slow for me too, especially uploading new photos - much of the time they don't appear for ten minutes or so and the page they are supposed to be on won't finish loading if you try before then. It's been like it since the end of last week. Sometimes if I go to 'arrange photos' I can kick start it.

    Have to agree
Photos seem to load in a reasonable amount of time, but it takes forever for the thumbs to be displayed in my albums (SmugMug style). Has been like this for over a week now.

Im in UK same here - very sloow:hope this helps

Try to relax... Traceroutes don't hurt a bit.

For the next 5 minutes or so, we'll be determining the path from SmugMug to your computer (82.22.219.253).

You can leave this page or stick around and watch the test run. Either way, you'll get a results email in about 10 minutes. SmugMug's Support Heroes will also have access to the results, and can help determine if there is a problem with your connection.

    Hi eenusa,

I took a look at some of your galleries and some were loading really fast and some were slow--as in really slow.

We all took a look at your account and I'm pretty sure what's happening is when we hit a gallery that hasn't been accessed for over a month, it's slow (sorry about that) but if it has been accessed recently, it's speedy.

It's actually been this way for about 3 weeks because we're planning a big product release that requires a database change, and we're changing the database in the background.

This is unrelated to the issues some people saw briefly (hopefully) yesterday, which had to do with a hiccup in the content delivery network we use.

The way we tested was to go to one of your galleries that was slow, then have others access it, and note that it was fast after the first access.

If we're off base, please let us know.

Thanks and sorry for the problem,
    Baldy

    Baldy,

Same for me...really slow to load, then when I log-in it hangs after I select go to my home page showing status of: looking up cdn.smugmug.com.

I am in NorCAL / East Bay area and I ran the speedtest for SBC Global / AT&T and here are the results:

    <a href="http://www.speedtest.net"><img src="http://www.speedtest.net/result/279552805.png"></a&gt;

As I am about to finish this, my home page still has not loaded.

I was on late last night and had no problems at all.

Hmmmm, why your home page would hang is stumping us. We don't seem to be able to replicate it but I'm sending the call out to our support heroes, who are geographically dispersed, to see if any of them can get it to load slow so we can figure out what's going on.

just a thought - I noticed that safari was decidedly more problematic than FF .. not always but it does hang more often.. so maybe others are getting the same block.. it's odd because it will hang just ona SM page (my site.. also Andy's site) but is still OK with other sites at the same time.. odd behaviourne_nau.gif

As for that tracert I posted I have no idea whether it was good or bad..

Exactly 3 weeks I'm noticing this too. But this issue seems to get solved with the product release.

Baldy, that problem I had not noticed ... thanks for the explanation.

My problem is actually with new galleries that I am setting up where the photos load normally, but then the thumbs don't display for a while ... haven't timed it, but what I have been doing is to load 4-5 photos, go process some more, upload more photos, and by then I can see the thumbs to select the first batch to add keywords, captions, and such. These are brand new albums that I am continuing to work on.

Do you think the database replacement you mentioned above is impacting the new gallery set up as well?

I have not made these galleries public yet - but any of the ones in this subcategory http://eenusa.smugmug.com/Europe/519416 have had and continue to have this problem. (If you need me to make them public, let me know.)

Whatever the deal was, it was limited and short. Everything seems to be fine for now.

Hmmm.... Those galleries are coming up in the blink of an eye for us so it's really hard to diagnose.

Are they coming up slow the first time you create them and fast after that?

I definitely know we've got a speed issue the first time you access albums that are older than a month, but we don't think we have one for new albums. Usually when we see this the page is waiting for a stat counter or something, but I don't see that in your customizaton.

For now, I'm sorry to say, we're stumped.

We're hoping to introduce our new feature early next week so if it's related to the database changes we're making in the background, that issue should be behind us then.

I went to customize in my smugmug account and deleted the statscounter and now the galleries load up real fast.

I'm going to try to re-install stats counter and see what happens.

Baldy - no problems with seeing thumbs promptly after they finally show up after the initial upload. I'll monitor to see if I see a change after the intro of the new feature.
