IP address change??? (have to type www. now)

My website no longer pulls up without typing in 'WWW' first. My domain name sits at Godaddy and it's worked fine for over a year by just typing the "address.com". What would have changed? Do I need to modify a setting on the godaddy side of the house?

Thanks!

    It's godaddy. Your domain (without www.) does not point to smugmug but to ip-208-109-80-14.ip.secureserver.net. Your www.kevinwinzeler.com points to smugmug.

    Okay, I'm a little confused. I went to the link, but for a Godaddy config it just says: -- Easy: Setting up your hostname with SmugMug/GoDaddy will automatically eliminate the need to type 'www' from your address. But there is no additional information.

    I did change the A(Host) record to point to 68.81.134.23 instead of the previous IP address, but that has not resolved it.

    I also created a new CNAMES (Aliases) "kevinwinzeler.com" -- Points To --> "@"

    Other Ideas?

    Right now you have broken it. Your DNS settings are invalid. Im amazed GoDaddy allows that.

    Do not use '@' for the domain name entry. Use:

    "kevinwinzeler.com" -- Points To --> "www.kevinwinzeler.com"

    "kevinwinzeler.com" -- Points To --> "www.kevinwinzeler.com" will not work.

    The correct CNAME set up is a www record pointed at www.smugmug.com

    Use the @ A(Host) record to point to 68.81.134.23

    Oops, you're right, the @ record is not allowed to be a CNAME. GoDaddy confused me by allowing him to even set it that way:

    ;; ANSWER SECTION:
    kevinwinzeler.com. 1H IN CNAME kevinwinzeler.com.

    But where do you get 68.81.134.23? I would guess you mean 63.81.134.23

    So use ' @ A 63.81.134.23'

    Yep, sorry about that. I copied the ip from above and did not pay attention.

    Here is the instructions for GoDaddy:

    It's still not working when typing "http://kevinwinzeler.com"

    Again, I've set-up godaddy just as explained in the instructions with A Record pointing to 63.81.134.23, and CNAME host www pointing to www.smugmug.com.

    What else could it be?

    PS - the other problem and headache this is causing is that when I add a new gallery and click the link back to the gallery from the uploader (simple), it goes the the "server not found" page because it's using the http://kevin... protocol (without www.)

    Kevin,

    Send me an email on the help desk Attn: Doc

    I need your GoDaddy customer number and password.

    I think you have your CNAME pointed back at itself and the A record does not show up in the NSLookup.

    Kevin, another thing I noticed is that you are using the redirect hack so that anyone hitting youynickname.smugmug.com address is sent to your custom domain. The downside of that is what you are seeing now. If the domain goes down for any reason there is no way to your site. If you do not use that code, you can always get your domain at the smugmug address.

    I can remove it for you but I wanted to see if we can get your domain working again first.

    Hey doc - I just got off of the phone with Godaddy and apparently they implemented a change on their end that has affected a number of clients with domains hosted and this has been the problem with my website and email. (something to do with changing the domaincontrol under the name server. The rep said it would be fixed within 24 hours.

    Furthermore, will your recommendation of removing the hack have any negative effects? I'm not sure why I had to use the hack in the first place, but I'll rely on your expertise on this one with the goal of course being as much accessiblity and up-time as possible.

    Thanks!

    WHAT???? Sheesh. Ok that explains it. We were looking at your DNS settings and what we saw did not make a lot of sense. headscratch.gif

    Hopefully they can get it fixed soon.

    Removing the redirect will not have any negative effects that I am aware of. The only side effect is that anyone getting to your site at the Smugmug address will not be redirected to the custom domain one. The key is they will be able to get to your site instead of a busted godaddy page.

    You have 2 A records. There should only be one. The one with 208.79.45.23 should stay. delete the other.

    The www CNAME should point at domains.smugmug.com you have it pointing back at your domain. That is a circle and will never resolve.
