Backgrounds - paper or cloth
What is the best material to use for studio backgrounds?
Paper (which it seems to me would rip easily especially when the model stands on it)
or Cloth which would last longer.
If i only have enough funds for one background what material should I buy and what color?

A lot of the decision to color has to do with the look you want to get. My first background was black cloth - sort of a fuzzy kind of cloth that does a wonderful job absorbing every last bit of light that strikes it. My second background was a roll of white paper as I was doing a lot of high-key portraits of kids.
Cloth is much more resilient, doesn't show wrinkles (which isn't always bad), and can be stowed away in a much smaller space. Overall, I think a cloth material is more flexible.
