Re: RAW->JPEG, why do my jpeg's seem grainy?
Exposure is just as critical with Raw as JPEG but you're feedback to correct exposure is way off thanks to how the manufacturers treat their LCD/Exposure systems (based on film, not Raw). If you truly underexpose the image, you get more noise. Raw is linearly encoded data (JPEG isn't). If you have a 12 bit image with 6… -

Re: Software for ".MOV video
In case any PC folks out there were following this thread looking for the answers for which I was searching, here's what I learned. I was successful using MPEG Streamclip to transcode my 7D .MOV files to Motion JPG AVIs and editing them in Vegas 9 Platinum. The problem with the Motion JPGs is that they're lossy, due to… -
Re: don't want photos to be public
Don't Get Me Wrong....I'm happy! Happy, because SmugIsland has been "discovered" (created, really, by the Smugmug team)! It's taking a while for me (and others, it appears) to learn the nuances. Unlike the poster in another thread who was happier before SmugIsland and other recent changes, and threatens to leave Smugmug, I… -
Re: Are the Smugmug servers overloaded?
I'm still at 719 kbps download. I get 11MB at other POPs and 7-10MB with myspeed and other benchmark sites. I masked identifying info on line 4: Tracing route to hera.smugmug.com [63.81.134.23] over a maximum of 30 hops: 1 <1 ms <1 ms <1 ms 10.16.48.1 2 1 ms 1 ms 1 ms 10.16.245.210 3 32 ms 31 ms 31 ms 10.16.248.53 4 32 ms… -
Re: Photo Management Software
Expression Media v. IDimager I think this is going to be a no-brainer. It only took me days to figure this out, but better now than later. I've downloaded both programs and played with both rather extensively. EM seems pretty good, even though it's in beta right now. But, bugs and incompleteness aside, it does seem quite… -

Re: Just learning with DSLR .. open for comments!!
I should clarify on this point…once the image has been blown out, it can't be fixed without reshooting. Blown out means details has been lost. Since it's lost, you can't get it back in post-processing (though there are ways to fake it, it won't be the actual lost details). The D90 has some great built-in tools for… -
Re: HS Basketball W/flash
So Maybe it wasn't the cables. I picked up a Multimax (a brand new one) so I have one new and one old (without the USB) and I also picked up a TT5 which I couldn't pass up for $129 and it was still wrapped in plastic! So I used the TT5 to transmit, MMax for left and right lights and a PW3 for the kicker light I use.. and… -
FH: Website Optimization for Photographers
Hi! I'm so glad to see this forum start up. I think there is a real need for it and as long as it doesn't get abused (I think that will take care of itself), it should prove beneficial for all of us! My name is Jeff Copeland, and first and foremost, I own Simple Treasures Photography in Tampa, Florida. My wife is the…
