Re: Andy's Un-Official Unsolicited Mac Advice Thread
Just be aware that the glossy screen is probably only part of the issue here. The MacBook screen is not as good as the MacBook Pro screen, glossy or not. The MacBook Pro CCFL screen is not as good as the MacBook Pro LED-backlit screen, and that is not nearly as good as an iMac desktop screen, before the CRT even enters… -

Beware of inexpesive routers with DHCP as they do not always react as expected. This one is probably in the weeds but it did bite me while doing some network troubleshooting at work. The less expensive routers with the integrated DHCP server do not always release the lease that has been assigned to a computer attached to… -

I've got a few updates for y'all. 1) I bought myself a MacBook Air. Aside from being USB only, this is the perfect laptop. I love it. A lot. When the Thunderbolt update comes out it will be the perfect machine, and I'll get it and hand this one off to my wife. 2) I was skeptical, but so far I've been really liking… -

In the Utilites folder in the Applications folder are two little programs - Grabber and Color something or other ( I am at work on a Windoz box right now). Grabber may be what you invoke with commnad shift 3, it lets you grab a screen shot or grab a window and save it as a gif. The color program gives you an eye-dropper… -

Rutt, Your drive is dying. It's as simple as that. The I/O error is a dead giveaway -- there are blocks that it can't write to. Ordinarily the drive would AUTOMATICALLY hide this from the OS so the fact that it's propagating through means bad things. Are you experiencing hanging (beachball) issues with the machine? If an… -

three ways I can think of (Safari, anyway): 1. right-click to get the menu; press option to get the "Download Linked File As..." command to manually set the download folder 2. option-click the link to the image (option-click forces link to download to default download folder instead of appearing in browser) 3. drag the… -

There are certain things that we know about Andy: 1) He loves food. 2) He likes instant gratification. 3) And a distant third, he likes to share his photography with the rest of us ;) Now this means that at times he'll find himself in Starbucks madly quaffing his Venti Triple Mocha Latte (extra foam), and realize he must… -
Re: Andy's Un-Official Unsolicited Mac Advice Thread
corrupted file on Mac I discovered one file on my MBP that can't be copied anymore. Finder says it can't read or write the file when trying to copy it. MU commander copies 2/3 of the file and then stops. So it's the source file that is corrupted. The file is not within the FileVault. Disk utility doesn't detect this as it…
