Re: Grassroots dgrin shootout - The Mother Road
I thought this might be interesting as I live in western California, but Route 66 goes through southern California, according to the link here: http://www.historic66.com/california/ Found another link with pictures http://www.cart66pf.org/66caravan/index.htm with Route 66 historian and preservationist Jim Conkle, for those… -
Re: Grassroots dgrin shootout - The Mother Road
DH & I have been trying to plan a RT 66 vacation for a bit-travel the whole route, then up PCH and visit family in CA then back home (there's another highway that goes across the country with a history too, might be the "old national highway" someone else referred to). We live in Western NY, so any part of RT 66 is a bit… -

Re: Grassroots dgrin shootout - The Mother Road
I've shot along Route 66 between Victorville and Amboy back in January 2007. I still need to process many of those images, and I still need to do a photo shoot at the Wigwam Motel on the San Bernardino/Rialto border. Been there scouting, but haven't gone back to shoot yet... You might recognize Wigwam as the inspiration… -

Re: Grassroots dgrin shootout - The Mother Road
Aaron, good to see a vote for February! :D We're moving to CA at the end of this month and due to visits along the way, we'll be driving Route 66 most (if not all) the way across. I know that the last week of February probably doesn't count as "spring" but I didn't check on ye olde groundhog's report yesterday. -
Re: Grassroots dgrin shootout - The Mother Road
No, I hadn't seen that. Thanks! It's true they only list a couple other "highlights" for Holbrook, but that puts Holbrook ahead of the rest of the cities/towns mentioned. And the WigWam is, in many minds, the definitive image of Rte 66. Heck, they used it in that cartoon movie Cars. Standing on a corner, of course. :D… -
Re: Grassroots dgrin shootout - The Mother Road
I'm very interested in the Southern CA portion. I like fall b/c it's fall, yea. I think starting from Route 66 in Quaint So. Pasadena and then going towards Bakersfield would be nice. I think this old pharmacy and soda shop would make a nice historic starting point. http://www.fairoakspharmacy.net/index2.html -
Re: Grassroots dgrin shootout - The Mother Road
Would be great fun. That stretch out near Kingman, AZ is, I think, one of the longest original pieces. I can make that taking a Friday off. :D As a Northern CA person, I've always thought about driving the length of US Route 50. Similar vintage to 66, but it's mostly intact as 2 lane road, all the way to the East coast. -
Re: Grassroots dgrin shootout - The Mother Road
Ben Wilmore's blog about shooting Rte 66 and his growth as a photographer is excellent, Anne. I loved it, and now I know why I liked my wigwam shot so much too:D Shooting in the winter, rather than spring might give a different voice to the images we all shoot also. What's wrong with trying to capture all of the seasons,…
