Re: Smugmug a Rip Off?
Just out of curiosity, I compared prices for a 16x24 metal print. On the Bay photo site, $85, plus float mount and rounded corners, $94.50 total. When I looked at the smug (base) price on my site for a 16x24 metal print it shows as $99.51. That's just $5 over the Bay Photo price. Yes, we are paying 15% to smug - but that's… -
Re: Smugmug a Rip Off?
Could not have said it better myself! One addition, maintaining your own credit card processing (unless you use PayPal) costs a monthly fee of about $16, so just looking at it that way, SmugMug is a good deal. Personally, the 15% is a tad steep (10%-12% would be better :D), but hey SmugMug is in business to make money;… -
Re: Smugmug a Rip Off?
I'm just starting my pro account here, and very excited about it. I have been going through the threads in this topic and wondering if it makes any sense to propose that the $150 work like a "deductible" where the first $150 of the %15 commissions contributes to annual fee? That way those who only use the account for… -
Smugmug a Rip Off?
Since turning my SmugMug site live in the last week of August '10 I've sold a little over $1200 worth of prints, mostly small sizes in either loose, luster prints, or moderately sized MetalPrints. And I'm pretty happy with those results. However, my profits have been surprisingly low. And honestly, I'm starting to feel… -
Re: Smugmug a Rip Off?
Amen. I think $150 for a pro account is a bargain. And I am totally okay with the 15% commission that SM takes. For that I am getting unlimited hosting, full customization of my website, 24/7 help at the dgrin forums, excellent customer service. The print quality is amazing and I don't have to worry about shipping,… -
Re: Smugmug a Rip Off?
The math on this stuff is pretty easy... Here's how I look at it. I pay $150/year for Smugmug to provide all the Pro level photo-site stuff, so it costs me $12.50/per month to not have to run my own site plus all the goodies I couldn't (easily) do myself. Then, they get 15% of the profit on each sale to manage the vendors,… -
Re: Smugmug a Rip Off?
I believe the hang-up in this situation regarding differences in Bay Photo's direct prices verses Bay Photo through SM is that the current SM pricing structure APPEARS to be deceptive on SmugMug's behalf. I'm not saying that is the intent or even what is occurring, but, Andy and SM folks, as you well know, perception is… -
Re: Smugmug a Rip Off?
I'm struggling with what to set my prices at. I ran across this thread while trying to find discussion on pricing. I'm a brand new Pro customer, and have a year to go to see how it goes. I'm curious how much success people have selling from their sites... for those like me, which at this point, is strictly selling via the… -
Re: Smugmug a Rip Off?
Hi, I'm new to Smugmug, but I absolutely love it! I've been a graphic artist and corporate branding specialist for over 10 years. Smugmug has allowed me to go back to doing what I love and let them do the shipping, printing, book-keeping,etc. Charging 15% for this huge undertaking is priceless to me. I think their prices… -
Re: Smugmug a Rip Off?
Ok... I think your service is a rip off. But back to the original point, whether something is a rip off or not is a rather subjective measure don't you think? I hope its safe to assume you don't feel your service is ripping you off, even though I obviously do. And while I don't think Smugmug is ripping people off, I don't…
