Re: Moving to the 5DmkII - help me with lens choice
Ehh, for a hobbyist / part time pro shooting more portraits and general photography than crazy wedding etc. photojournalism, I think you'll find that a 17-40 and 70-200 are your best friends. As others have said, neither the 24-70 nor the 24-105 are going to be as sharp as the likes of the 17-40 and 70-200's. (By landscape… -
Re: Moving to the 5DmkII - help me with lens choice
Indeed, most all of my images are taken at those focal lengths. Either wide, (24mm on full-frame) medium tele, (85mm) ...or more tele. (200mm) ...But that doesn't necessarily mean you need to lug a 24-70 around. I cannot stress enough just how much I hate heavy, obscene lenses for personal, casual shooting. It's just not… -

Re: Moving to the 5DmkII - help me with lens choice
17-40 is an easy recommendation, considering the value and size/weight. 24-70/2.8 is the other. Seriously, if you want to realize the DOF and speed benefits of FF, don't fool around with the 24-105/4. Your 17-55 was already giving you f/4.5 in terms of FF DOF, so if you go to an f/4 lens as your primary walk-around, you… -
Re: Moving to the 5DmkII - help me with lens choice
Moving to the Dark SIde One of the big questions is how deep into the dark side would you like to go? The 5d2 has noteworthy high ISO performance, but the 5d3 appears to take that to a whole new level. You've already said that a 5d3 is in your future, you'll love delving deep into high ISO - and getting better focus while… -
Re: Moving to the 5DmkII - help me with lens choice
If you shoot weddings at all, each stepping stone eventually just becomes a backup. That's why you can pretty much buy ANYTHING that is the cheaper version of the thing you REALLY want, and just use that cheaper version until you can afford the better version. The day you buy that better version, the previous version does… -
Re: Moving to the 5DmkII - help me with lens choice
I might suggest thinking in terms of which lenses to get first, not limit yourself to a set number of lenses for all time. Disclaimer: It really does depend on what YOU shoot and YOUR priorities. The 24-105 IS 4.0 Is great all purpose walk around lens on a full frame body, and would be my first pick. While the 24-70 2.8… -
Re: Moving to the 5DmkII - help me with lens choice
Good point Dan. I called around to a few places today including Andy's favorite Tallyn's. They said they only get notified of shipments 24 hours ahead of time but expect another batch to come in next week. I think they had 8 on the list with 14 bodies expected to come in. Also, there is a new Canon lens promo coming so if… -
Re: Moving to the 5DmkII - help me with lens choice
Dammit Jack - it's like you're on a mission to get me to spend every last dime Not only do you have me second guessing the 24-70 vs 24-105 argument, you even have me second guessing the mkII vs mkIII argument. Guess it's not really thread-jacking if I do it to myself so here goes... As background, I have the 50D and have… -
Re: Moving to the 5DmkII - help me with lens choice
Thanks Nak. One of the driving factors is that I noticed my shots this winter plummeted. I just don't shoot with the 50d indoors which means missing out on shots of the kids as they grow up. As for lenses, I am starting with the 17-40 and 70-200 and will flush out my needs from there. I'll very likely borrow the 24-70…
