state of the art on low contrast auto focus?
Hello fellow dgrinners. I have to admit I'm not as active as I should be here, just stop in when I need info/opinions. I'll try to fit in time for more of the other direction in the future. I shoot a genre loosely called modeled-street, over 1,500 examples at my Flickr link below, a far lesser number at the SmugMug link.… -

FS: The Lengendary "Bokina" Vivitar Series 1 90/2.5 M42 Macro - Mint+
This is the best macro out there. Period. I've tested against the Voigtlander 125mm macro, and it had the same sharpness wide-open. And I actually found that the bokeh was a bit smoother than the Voigtlander (just a tiny bit). I also had the Leica APO 100/2.8 (another legend). And though I didn't test them against each… -
Re: A trip to the Serengeti--need some advice on glass
I've been on Safari three times, twice in Kenya, and once in South Africa. I have also photographed wildlife across North America, Alaska, Greenland and Svalbard. I have used lenses from 16mm to 800mm and in between chasing critters. I think the first question you have to answer is do you want to photograph birds and large… -
Re: Post your best wedding ring pictures
haha, yes ma'am! My biggest thing with ring photos is to really utilize the theme and what you have available to you at the time. 1. This is from the wedding I second shot with urbanaries. It was an indian wedding and this was a shawl type thing she had as part of her outfit that she wasn't wearing at the time we took the… -
Re: Must Buy Canon Lenses?
I'd want something in my kit wider that then 35/1.4. The simple answer to that is the 24/1.4 might replace the 135/2 because for most of my low light work the 135 is too long on a crop body. However the EF-S 17-55/2.8 IS potentially could change my entire kit design. Right now I use fast primes for most of my people… -
Re: Canon Equestrian lens question
I have been shooting equestrian events for the past 2.5 years. I've used the 70-300, 70-300IS, 70-200/4L, 70-200/2.8L, and 70-200/2.8LIS. Best rig IMHO is a 40D with a 70-200/2.8L (non-IS). I use that lens, and my wife is using the 70-200/4L non-IS for weight reasons. That will cover most jumper/dressage arenas. For larger… -
Re: Reflex lenses
I had a 600mm mirror lense for my first camera, a Pentax ME Super. They are capable of making sharp images and are a poor man's chance to get some reach but they do have some disadvantages. They are slow lenses, typically f/8 (Nikon has made one that is f/5,6). Usually a person uses long glass like 600mm to photograph… -
Re: Canon 24-70 L series or 24-105f/4 ??
I don't see a camera listed in your profile, so I'll mention both full-frame and 1.6x crop (assuming Canon, by your lens choice.) On a full frame camera these are wonderful lenses and either will cover many, if not most, of the situations you might encounter for a "typical" wedding shoot. The Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L USM is… -
Re: Equestrian Eventing - trying something new
Hey Andy, I don't know if the other two posters ride or show as well, but I do. So, I am the customer base too. I think the biggest problems with this style will be a) image quality from a technical standpoint and b) image desireability. If shot really well this could be an AWESOME shot. This shot is quite cool, the rider…
