Re: Andy's Un-Official Unsolicited Mac Advice Thread
Most bang for your buck is probably going to be the iMac with a second monitor... I plan on getting the 24" iMac for myself in the next few months, and then possibly upgrading Schmoo's monitor so I can steal her 23" (shh, don't tell her!) if I find the glossy is just too hard to work with. I've always been a big fan of… -
Re: Andy's Un-Official Unsolicited Mac Advice Thread
So tonight I came home with the following: iMac 20" with the same amount of 'guts' as the first level of 24". The more powerful 24" is special order and 6 - 8 weeks away...:cry . I didn't want to wait... So, I decided on the 20" with a 23" apple cinema display. The sales guy figured that as a "prosumer" I might be better… -

1. Yes you will. 2. If you have a full copy of widows, the latest MACS let you nativelly boot up in windows, so you can still run MS Office with the copy you already have. I have not come across and issue migrating files over yet. 3. I have not used a laptop for ages, but if I were to go down that route I would definately… -
Re: Andy's Un-Official Unsolicited Mac Advice Thread
Step-sine wave. My G5 is running off of the year old APC Back UPS 800 because I haven't bought a more industrial strength unit. It doesn't make noise and it's handled two electrical outages so far. I'd rather have the sine wave Smart-UPS, but am enjoying the cost savings. Have had SmartUPSes before for desktops and… -
Re: Andy's Un-Official Unsolicited Mac Advice Thread
CRT? Really? Ha. Well, good to know some things are really really backward compatable. I was drooling over the Dell 30" U3011. Man oh man. And how Apple can't even see fit to include HDMI inputs into a spanking new 27" LED CS, that can only hurt them in the long run. Haven't read anywhere how one can calibrate it either.… -
Re: Andy's Un-Official Unsolicited Mac Advice Thread
New in here, so be kind and easy on this Mac n00b. Finger is on the button for a Mac Pro. Any day now. Got a couple Q's. 1. I have a perfectly working ViewSonic 23" VP231wb IPS 1920x1200 monitor that I love. About 4.5 years old. Has an accurate sRGD built-in profile that is, AFAIK, spot on. I have never bothered to… -
Re: Andy's Un-Official Unsolicited Mac Advice Thread
Ann: FWIW, that's pretty much my plan. And yes, you can get a 24" iMac with a second 23" display for less than the MacPro. IMHO, this system will have enough "umph" to handle all of your photo needs. IE, running your editing software and allowing you to do photomerges etc in a decent amount of time. I'm really happy with… -
Re: Andy's Un-Official Unsolicited Mac Advice Thread
Thanks, Michael, Simon, David, Steven and Andrew for taking the time to reply. Just a few comments about the comments so far. I know there are several ways to virtualize Windows on the Mac, but I don't want to go that route. Boot camp forces you to use one environment at a time, which does not suit my work style at all.… -
Re: Andy's Un-Official Unsolicited Mac Advice Thread
OK, this is serious. I'm in love. :D Here's what I've been using it for: * Bypassing iStink, er, iSync. I've had a lot of problems with iSync working properly, and having to reset sync prefs. One app that I love is TextExpander, which uses iSync to synchronize settings across Macs. But iSync wasn't working. So, I had to…
