Re: Andy's Un-Official Unsolicited Mac Advice Thread
I use a logitech 7 button mouse. Yup, I know odd, but here are how they break down 1: Left Click 2: Right Click 3: Far Thumb All Apps 4: Close Thumb Just Apps in this space 5: Scroll Wheel/Center Button: Dashboard 6: Left on scroll wheel, scroll left (sometimes I reprogram to home) only in VMware 7: Right on scroll wheel,… -
Re: Andy's Un-Official Unsolicited Mac Advice Thread
Another discussion of the standards wars here. Keep in mind that while some parts of HTML 5 are being implemented today, the full standard is not expected to reach W3C Recommendation status till 2022, at which time we will all be arguing about HTML 6. I don't follow these things very closely but it looks to me like it's… -
Re: Andy's Un-Official Unsolicited Mac Advice Thread
(Remember that I'm a PC fanboy) Gawker has an axe to grind against Apple because of the stolen iPhone 4 prototype. Take everything you read form one of their sites about Apple with two grains of salt. I do think that this application store is just the first step in what will be a several year process of eventually "walling… -

You may want to wait just a bit to see which comes out with a better implementation of virtualizing Lion (if that matters to you). I got Parallels 6 for free with my iMac purchase from BHphoto. Had previously used VMware. The two are very similar with regards to running Win7. I really want to virtualize Lion so I can test… -
Re: Andy's Un-Official Unsolicited Mac Advice Thread
Yeah I just realized it feels "simplified" for me because I have it trimmed down to a bunch fewer options normally so as to use less screen real estate. View: code tables, top box shrunk down to only a couple lines, bottom box showing about 6 to 8 lines, font panel compacted. I use it a lot to find unicode and utf-8 values… -
Re: Andy's Un-Official Unsolicited Mac Advice Thread
I just had to chime in on the cost issue, because that kept me from buying a mac for a long time. Look at the specs of a mac (hard drive, memory, processor speed, video card (video memory), etc), then go to Dell's web site and build a PC with similar specs. You'll find that there is really very little cost difference… -
Re: Andy's Un-Official Unsolicited Mac Advice Thread
Gotta tell you all - and thank you all -how nice it is to work on 1. these big screens 2. monitors that actually show color and contrast properly 3. a machine that doesn't cough, choke and sputter because you have more than one image open. In fact, today I had to move 6 people into one team photo, and had all the… -
Re: Andy's Un-Official Unsolicited Mac Advice Thread
Ann: FWIW, that's pretty much my plan. And yes, you can get a 24" iMac with a second 23" display for less than the MacPro. IMHO, this system will have enough "umph" to handle all of your photo needs. IE, running your editing software and allowing you to do photomerges etc in a decent amount of time. I'm really happy with… -
Re: Andy's Un-Official Unsolicited Mac Advice Thread
Gotta love a SSD and lotsa RAM - 4.81 seconds Hi Andy, I ran across that speed test and ran it on my new PC. First time was 5 seconds. Having now learned what to watch for (a spinning circle instead of a progress bar) I tried to be more accurate with my stopwatch timing. Second time was 4.81 secs. (Open programs: a few… -
Re: Andy's Un-Official Unsolicited Mac Advice Thread
It's when you save files directly to a network share from within a CS3 application. Apple changed something in 10.5.3 which breaks whatever CS3 was doing. Note, that this has NEVER been supported by Adobe -- they have always recommend you save files locally. The crux of the problem is that Photoshop has some VERY VERY old…
