Re: A trip to the Serengeti--need some advice on glass
I've been on Safari three times, twice in Kenya, and once in South Africa. I have also photographed wildlife across North America, Alaska, Greenland and Svalbard. I have used lenses from 16mm to 800mm and in between chasing critters. I think the first question you have to answer is do you want to photograph birds and large… -
Re: canon 85mm 1.8 and canon 135mm f2
I shoot weddings with two cameras, each with a zoom mounted. I used to use a pair of 50D bodies, one with a EF 70-200 f/2.8L IS and the other with the EF-S 17-55 f/2.8 IS USM. During the ceremony, I found I was swapping back and forth between these all the time and changing the focal length of each as I went - there really… -
Re: Canon 15-85 or 17-55
Of these options, I think I would recommend the first. The 17-55 has it all over 15-85. If you can scrape the money together, I would augment the 17-55 with something like the 85 f/1.8. Looking that the charts on the Canon web-site, I can see the delima - which is better? I really can't talk to the longer lens, but my copy… -
Re: Canon EOS 10D - Still worth putting money in to?
The 10D is a very fine camera. I use a friend's 10D all the time, and the only problem I have with it is the tiny screen. Actually, the 20D's screen is not much bigger. As to image quality (IQ), I find the 10D to be very good, at least compared to my 1DII. Sure, it's no 5D, but for a crop body it'll do the job well. I'd… -
Re: Help! Motorcycle Race/Flash Questions....
Jeff, Sorry to hear about the rain..however,the season is just starting! (was 105 in Phoenix!) Well this is my attempt at both posting pics and night shots w/ext flash.... my settings were: (20D- parameter 1) Manual, f4.0, 1/250, flash@ETTL, 70-200L 2.8 IS,(IS off),ISO 3200, manual focus as they came to me (for the most… -
Re: Please convince me!!!
Wow... I truly feel as I have to climb another step! Well, a good thing... maybe I was getting bored? (NOT). Nikolai, thank you for your time, very much. I admire your photography. I always shoot on 100ISO, my "L" lenses are 2.8, so it works, it is all in the shaking! We ride mostly dirt, the hack is not as a motorcycle,… -
Re: Finally Found My Tin Snips
Ms. Garner, I respect your opinion, your work, and your post to this thread. I really didn't intend for this to become a animal welfare issue! I hoped for constructive criticism on the photographs and that some people would enjoy seeing images of the hawk looking for a meal. As a biologist and educator who enjoys our avian… -
Re: Advice wanted
Here are some random thoughts for you. * What's your budget? While you may not shoot video, you have a sense of DSLRs. "Used" means you're looking at what's available. * In addition to a body, you'll need a lens. I only know Canon. Image Stabilized (IS) lenses make noise during stabilization. Normal EF lenses make noise… -
Re: Shooting Basketball....VR or no VR?
I have shot HS basketball for the past few years with the Canon system and can share some of my thoughts. You can apply these to what is available and affordable in the Nikon system. VR is not needed nor very helpful for basketball. VR is valuable mostly for holding the camera steady on a stationary target where you would… -
Re: Is full frame worth it?
I have been having the same quandary for quite some time......until just a few short years ago I had shot 35mm and 2 1/4 and then with the advent of digital I have been torn since I lost several rolls of film from my Czech Republic Vacation in 2003.....however since I shoot mostly outdoors: landscapes and wild life for the…
