Re: Andy's Un-Official Unsolicited Mac Advice Thread
So what are you going to be listening through? BIG Speakers (taller than 24 inches), small desktop speakers, bookshelf speakers.. etc. I have had good experience with many different USB audio devices and rather than confuse the question, I am trying to understand the listening experience. It sounds odd but if the… -
Re: Andy's Un-Official Unsolicited Mac Advice Thread
I'm no Mac guru, but I recently did the switcheroo from PC to Mac for my primary CS3 machine. Since I already had a 24" FWP monitor, it made it a littel easier. I went for the MacBook Pro 15". It has a DVI connection and handles separate calibrated monitor profiles. My main issue was storage, so I have external drives for… -
Re: Andy's Un-Official Unsolicited Mac Advice Thread
I just bought an iMac!!! Hi CarnalSigh, I actually use both PC (at work because I HAVE to) and a Mac a home...I just ordered a new iMac (about 2 hours ago...whoo hoo). I ended up with the 24" iMac with 2.16 processor and 2GB ram, with 500GB HD...I added the Aperture software with the package so it'll be pre-installed for… -
Re: Andy's Un-Official Unsolicited Mac Advice Thread
Well I broke down...Just ordered a refurb, 24" 2.16Ghz iMac. I am looking forward to the sweet IPS screen on this thing, and the fact that it is the matte, not glossy screen. Now, I have to figure out how to connect all my hard drives. My PC is set up with the following: 1 main 160 GB IDE drive for OS and apps, a secondary… -
Re: Andy's Un-Official Unsolicited Mac Advice Thread
Thanks, cabbey. I played around a bit but as far as I can see, there's a wall between Unix and the Mac stuff. For example, in a terminal session, I can cd to / and ls will show /etc, but etc does not show in the Finder when I do open . I then tried sudo open . but the result was the same--Finder shows the Mac stuff and… -
Re: Andy's Un-Official Unsolicited Mac Advice Thread
my last HP Vectra that was at least 2 yrs old when I purchased it died a week ago.....can't get it up past the black screen that says i moved a hdd and the keyboard...i ran it hard (24/7/365 1/4) for 6 years ....it was only off if I lost electricity......no viruses only 2 hdd failures......I paid a whole whopping 325.00… -
Re: Andy's Un-Official Unsolicited Mac Advice Thread
Most bang for your buck is probably going to be the iMac with a second monitor... I plan on getting the 24" iMac for myself in the next few months, and then possibly upgrading Schmoo's monitor so I can steal her 23" (shh, don't tell her!) if I find the glossy is just too hard to work with. I've always been a big fan of… -
Re: Andy's Un-Official Unsolicited Mac Advice Thread
Have you considered the relationship between the filesystem block size and size of the files? Case in point, say you use FAT16 which commonly has a cluster size of 32K. Say your photos are all 35K in size... every one of them will use 2 clusters, so 10 images will consume 640K of disk space, even if they only appear to… -
Re: Andy's Un-Official Unsolicited Mac Advice Thread
Well, I have seen them in the stores, and plan on getting the MacBook for my wife, but honestly, I didn't notice the screen being distracting. I have an HP laptop with a glossy screen, and after a year of use, I must say it isn't an issue. I am often angling my screen on a non-glossy Thinkpad as much as I do on the glossy… -
Re: Andy's Un-Official Unsolicited Mac Advice Thread
Ann: FWIW, that's pretty much my plan. And yes, you can get a 24" iMac with a second 23" display for less than the MacPro. IMHO, this system will have enough "umph" to handle all of your photo needs. IE, running your editing software and allowing you to do photomerges etc in a decent amount of time. I'm really happy with…
