Re: Andy's Un-Official Unsolicited Mac Advice Thread
I just had to chime in on the cost issue, because that kept me from buying a mac for a long time. Look at the specs of a mac (hard drive, memory, processor speed, video card (video memory), etc), then go to Dell's web site and build a PC with similar specs. You'll find that there is really very little cost difference… -

Gotta tell you all - and thank you all -how nice it is to work on 1. these big screens 2. monitors that actually show color and contrast properly 3. a machine that doesn't cough, choke and sputter because you have more than one image open. In fact, today I had to move 6 people into one team photo, and had all the… -

Ann: FWIW, that's pretty much my plan. And yes, you can get a 24" iMac with a second 23" display for less than the MacPro. IMHO, this system will have enough "umph" to handle all of your photo needs. IE, running your editing software and allowing you to do photomerges etc in a decent amount of time. I'm really happy with… -

Gotta love a SSD and lotsa RAM - 4.81 seconds Hi Andy, I ran across that speed test and ran it on my new PC. First time was 5 seconds. Having now learned what to watch for (a spinning circle instead of a progress bar) I tried to be more accurate with my stopwatch timing. Second time was 4.81 secs. (Open programs: a few… -

It's when you save files directly to a network share from within a CS3 application. Apple changed something in 10.5.3 which breaks whatever CS3 was doing. Note, that this has NEVER been supported by Adobe -- they have always recommend you save files locally. The crux of the problem is that Photoshop has some VERY VERY old… -
Re: Andy's Un-Official Unsolicited Mac Advice Thread
Well... Now, take into consideration that my XP laptops are old... one is a Pentium II 400Mhz (about 6 yrs old), and my "newer" one is a P4 1.6 w/only a gig of ram. Software wise, I have MS Office for one, I've already paid for it in one, Star Office on another one, Quicken, mIRC, some PC games, an HDTV external tuner...… -
Re: Andy's Un-Official Unsolicited Mac Advice Thread
It was an Apple Christmas ... My slide to the dark side all started when my DW gave me an iPad for Christmas (64Gb 3G). I gulped the coolaid and it tasted good ... :D. Anyway, on Boxing Day, I went to the Apple Store (my first time) to look for some iPad goodies. I didn't leave with any iPad goodies, but instead, a new 21"… -

Re: Andy's Un-Official Unsolicited Mac Advice Thread
On the other hand, if what you really want it the most processors / $, perhaps so you can run i2e over lots of images in parallel, there are cheaper solutions. For example, Mac Minis are about $800 and have two processors. So you get about 6 of them for $5k which would be 12 processors. The Core 2 Duo Extreme that's in the… -
Re: Andy's Un-Official Unsolicited Mac Advice Thread
Tell me about it... The first generation G4 iBook I'm using right now spent about 6 months total (3 seperate visits) back to Apple. I spent hours on the phone, 1st time they shipped it back after a month because I had YDL installed on it. Second time they replaced the faulty logic board with yet another faulty board. 3rd…
