Re: RAW or JPEG
I don't know if DPP has the option, but in PS you can shift from 16 to 8 in the Image Menu under the Mode heading (you can select the color space and bits per channel), you want RGB 8-bits/channel. In general, keep things in 16-bit until you need to go to 8-bit. No need to through away precision when you don't need to. -

Re: RAW or JPEG
If you are using DPP (Digital Photo Professional) to process your RAW files, I believe that it will try to emulate your camera's JPG settings by default. If you retain the default conversion settings it should look very similar to the JPGs from the camera. If you save the processed image from DPP as a 16 bit TIFF file, it… -
Re: RAW or JPEG
Just a clarification. RAW files have no white balance until the white balance is defined in the RAW processing software. Just as you can set your white balance in-camera for JPGs and TIFFs, so too you can set white balance (WB) "after-the-fact" for the RAW data. This means that if you accidentally set the wrong WB… -
Re: RAW or JPEG
The GIMP is currently an 8-bit application. Unfortunately that does mean some loss in ultimate quality. I have used a Raw Therapee-to-GIMP workflow for a remote computer (not mine), staying in Raw Therapee for as long as possible (which is a 16-bit application), and then switching to GIMP for any layers and activities that… -
Re: RAW or JPEG
JPEG compressed your image down to an 8-bit per channel image (compression is lossy). RAW is the 12 to 14 bit sensor data, unprocessed. So for portrait work, if you find that you have some highlights blown, you can recover (1-2 stops) and still have data there. In JPEG, that would have been clipped to 0xff (255) and there… -
Re: RAW or JPEG
As Mark mentions, your version of Photoshop does not have ACR, so RAW files and DNG files are not understood (except and unless you happen to have the rather ancient RAW plugin, which still would not help with DNG and would only help with a few old camera's RAW files). Picasa does convert many RAW files, but I believe that… -
Re: RAW or JPEG
You know what, it sounds like you might just wanna stick with what you've got. I don't say that as "you're not ready for the big leagues" or something snobbish like that, but just because you're relatively HAPPY with what you're doing right now. Unless I am mistaken? If you're not happy with your old workflow, and you're… -
Re: RAW or JPEG
RAW files are superior for paying jobs for the following reasons: 1) WB set after-the-fact in the RAW processing software. 2) Potential for superior noise reduction from RAW source. 3) Finer gradation for smooth and gradual tone transitions. (Skin tones, sky, clouds, etc.) 4) Ability to retain more data for longer portion…
