I think #1 was a good idea. However, I also think you want a DOF that keeps the pie in focus and everything else OOF. How to do that you ask? What you'll need to do is figure out the size of the slice front to back and then calculate the aperture that you gets the pie in focus from the tip to crust. Good luck!
