Yes - the 24-70 L costs quite a bit more than the 28-135f3.5 IS. But there is no comparison in the lenses among lens afficianados. The 24 vs 28 does not sound like very much, but a 24mm lens HAS a Significantly wider field of view than a 28. It must be seen to appreciate how much wider. The 24-70 is F2.8 versus f3.5. But… -

Another option is to get the 20d with the kit lens, the 18-55. That lens will cover you for most short range stuff for a while and it adds $50 to the price of the camera.
