D300 Dynamic Area Focus question

So I'm looking at my D300 and I almost always use the single point AF setting. But I'm interested in the Dynamic Area. Except I can't get it to work. If I do the 51 3D, I can move the camera around and the focus point jumps around. I also tried the 9,21 and 51 non 3D options but the sensor does not move around, change focus as I move the subject around.
I'm using a Nikon 50 1.4 lens and the focus mode is set to Continous servo.
Could anyone tell me what the problem is?

How many photographers does it take to change a light bulb? 50. One to change the bulb, and forty-nine to say, "I could have done that better!"

I've locked it so that my nose does not move the sensor around.

Didn't your mother ever tell you.."Don't stick you nose where it don't belong"?
