Fixing badly backlit photo with lens flare

So I took a group photo late enough in the day that I had harsh low sun. Decided that I could deal with it better by placing subjects with their backs to the sun. I've done this many times successfully but this time, the combo of backlighting and lens flare seem too much to overcome.

What PS tool might deal with one or the other most effectively? I can leave the sky blown and just not include much of it in the photo but the cast and flare have me stumped. :dunno

(and as soon as the service problems are solved I can give an sample.)

it really depends on where exactly and how bad the flare is... Do you have a sample? Sometimes it's realy easy, but in some case I had to resort to "borrowing" the affected faces from other frames (you did take more than one frame, didn't you?)
