The question of a rugged storage disk seems to come up regularly. Is this one suitable for the traveling photographer, do you think? Price is Aus$ which is not too different to US nowadays.

And B&H as usual comes through with an even better price. For the USB only model cited above, it is $299.95 http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/558881-REG/LaCie_301370_500GB_Rugged_All_Terrain_USB.html . FireWire/USB variant is $50 more.

I cannot remembr the brand nor the magazine the article was in...however.....one of the big Hdd companies got a contract to make a "HUMMVEY" of a hdd..it had to be able to run in extremely high temps (gulf War), sealed to all types of weather, sand , dust etc etc....it could withstand a drop of like 6 feet or so......it was completely rubber sealed and the case seam was O-ringed......It seemed odd that the price wasn't much higher than this Lacie.

I am sure an astute googler could find it though.
