What is the best way to archive old photographs?

My father gave me a treasure trove of pictures from my childhood. I would like to know how y'all scan and archive your pictures.
Most of the pix do not have negatives, some do, they are 35mm and 6x6. How do you preserve the original photos and negatives after scanning? I went to the archive store and got the acid free photo-sleeves. This seems better than just cramming them in envelopes. I have hundreds of pix, so some will be put back in envelopes, others need special care.
I am scanning the pictures using a canon 8400F using VueScan. The professional version has the option to capture the data as-is from the scanner then you can rescan from file. My settings are:
Bits Per Pixel: 24 bit RGB
Scan Resolution: 1600 dpi
Single Pass
No filtering or color management.
The 35mm scans use a plustek opticfilm7200 and vuescan. I have to use a XP VM for this to work.
How the heck do I scan the 6x6 slides, they look like junk when scanned from the canon 8400F
My preference is to scan too much now and not have to redo it later.
Once I have the photos I import them into aperture where I can do basic color correction. I can use photoshop CS3 for the major stuff.
I am having a ton of fun going thru the old pix, and I am learning more than I expected about colors, white balance, and many other terms I am starting to grasp (any recommend books)
My system is a MacPro 2.8gzh 6gb RAM, 24" Apple Cinema Monitor, Canon 8400F Scanner, Plustek optif film 7200 35mm scanner, Huey Pro Monitor Calibration
I have attached one of the gems that I found. It was me at the age of two.
