How's my Google Analytics doing?

I have been tracking my Google analytic reports for a few months now.
Really, I'm an SEO novice, still trying to "put it all together" so I can build some more traffic to my site.

Today and for the last month, my traffic has been coming in as follows:
  • Search Engines 454 (52.98%)
  • Referring Sites 243 (28.35%)
  • Direct Traffic 160 (18.67%)
I realize this is not exactly heavy traffic but, it's the ratio I'm more wanting to understand than the traffic itself at this time. Are those statistics I should be happy with at this point? Is there a "target" one wants to reach in the balance of this traffic or does everyone simply want to see their Search Engine traffic far outweigh the other sources?

My bounce rate has been hovering at about 37 - 40% which to me seems a bit high also. Of course I've been toying with the web page for months now and only recently is in anywhere near stabilized in it's final design.

Any insight into this would be appreciated.
