Some recent hoverfly shots. The natural light shots are Volucella pellucens - first I've seen this year.

Hi there Brian, what is that one?
At first I thought it didn't have any wings but then I saw it's just the angle the wings are on that make them look almost invisible.
That is a gorgeous cluster of purple flowers how pretty are they!
Your Macros are always stunning Brian

Im just starting to get into macro, and your photography amazes me. Is your technique a secret recipe? Are all the things you shoot "wild" or do you stage these bugs? Do you use a tripod, flash, extension tubes?
Maybe this is out of place, so dont feel obligated to reply. I just cant beleive how perfect your images are.
I have a tokina 100mm macro and a D80.
The clarity of the images is excellent, but the color really works for me.

Always a joy to view your work Brian and also, thanks for the flash advice. It helped me make up my mind.
Tight Lines & Best Fishes!
unbroken- No they are shots in situ of wild bugs- lots of info here on how I do my shots http://www.flickr.com/groups/topic/66514/.
akmoose - I think shooting macro with film would have been quite a headache with a lot of wasted shots. I certainly don't think there would have been any easy way of doing focus stacking with an enlarger.

So what are your views on extension tubes? (kenko and other).
I thought for sure that would be part of your setup. Thanks!
Great series Brian. I liked 3 and 4 they reminded me of the Belted Galloway cattle we have around here.

Bob
I've been wanting to get back into macro for a long time and I've successfully battled of the urge... until now. Those damn photos you posted have thrown me over the edge - those outstanding images will probably cost me a couple thousand bucks, and I hope you feel REALLY bad about it. I've got to head to the camera store now - where's my wallet.... :cry
Obviously, kidding aside, the photos are terrific, and the Flickr writeup you referred us to is very informative - Thanks much for the images and the info.
Take care, John Brody

Unbroken - I routinely use ext tubes with my sigma 105 and canon 200mm lenses. I have Jessops brand ones - very similar to Kenkos. I also used to use a reverse 50mm lens on the front of my 105mm a lot, but the MPE-65 saves me having to do that.
John- Hope you don't spend too much
