I'm planning for my vacation and I've been looking for an exteranl to download all my photos to while on the road. I see Western Digital has the Passports.....but are there any others and is the Passport reliable?

I do have a laptop, but I would like to download them onto that first..dump the crappy photos and then move them to the external, but I don't know of a kind that is trustworthy and reliable. I would hate to get home and the photos have not there anymore.

Can you just transfer you photos to the portable external without a computer?

My Passport travelled all over Wales and England and Scotland in my backpack in May. Brought home over 100Gb of image data.

It seems to be as reliable as my Firelite drives, and my LaCie portable hard drives that all require no external power source.

I transferred my images via a Mac Book Pro, because I wanted to delete the clinkers immediately. I do not know how to write directly from a CF chip to a portable hard drive without a laptop. I always remove my CF cards and use a card reader, I never transfer files directly from my camera to a storage device.

You can try hyperdrives. You can load all your photos from your media to that without a need for a computer, but I don't know if you can delete the bad ones in it. I am thinking so, but I am not sure.

I have looked at the LaCie's since I liked the ruggedness of it and thought it would be something I would need for the added protection, but I read someplace that it isn't Vista ready and my laptop is Vista along with my home computer. Am I wrong on this?

As for hyperdrives --- I don't know, but I would think there would be a portable external that had a CF reader that can attach to it and download right to the portable external. Or am I confused headscratch.gif Wouldn't surprise me any rolleyes1.gif
