San Francisco 49ers Training Camp 2008
For once, I was obtained some San Francisco 49ers' morning training camp tickets instead of my usual 4 pm weekday time slot and offered to take some dgrinners with me like previous years. At the last minute, I decided to send an e-mail to Dan and he was able to come with me! :clap:clap
Unfortunately, the 49ers spent most of the session on the FAR field instead of the one closest to us likes years past and good photo opportunities were difficult and few. :rolleyes Now, I want to go to another session.
I still have trouble shooting in sunlight, but I think I’m doing better these days.
1. Joe Nedney, kicker
2. Dennis Haley, LB
3. Unknown big guy
4. Block Drill
5. Allen Rossum, CB
6. Dontarrious Thomas, LB
7. Jeff Ulbrich, #53, LB
C&C welcomed and appreciated

Nice shots!
I think you did rather well. Up the saturation and contrast of the grass a bit to match players outfits better?
You're also showing a few players looking for something outside the frame, I'd like see more shots of what they were looking at
Good job

I think you would be more interested in the fans than the game itself. I think in some parts of the US, american football is considered a religion.
Thanks for the kind words!
If you're ever here in July/August, there is a decent chance that you can also go to the training camp!
One is wearing black gloves and the other is wearing red gloves, but I have to agree -- tree trunks.
If people didn't wear numbers, I wouldn't be able to tell anyone apart. They were big, Big, and BIGGER. And they didn't have pads on yet...
As for the grass, I might try that, but it would be very unnatural for California since much of the state is a desert. The grass was a brownish-green color and the jerseys popped in color because they were still new (clean!). However, I'll give them another shot in post! Thanks so much for the suggestion.
And as for the players looking outside of the frame... I did get some, but wasn't as happy with those frames because they were not as "clean" for me.
1. On the Offensive Line Hopscotch
2. Trashcans and football
3. Leg Lines
4. Spinning red thing on tire
5. Looking for a pass
From the wonderful people on dgrin and by studying the work of various SI photographers, I try to post sports images with a “sports shooter” mind set.

- Expose for the face, even if the sky is a bit blown out
- Conveys action or emotion -- captures the moment
- Shoot tight, crop tighter – all the extra stuff; gone!
- Pay attention the backgrounds – extra people, objects, etc, or make the background have some sort of meaning
- Tack Sharp focus; nothing soft
- Proper exposure during moment and good post work (panning, freeze motion, etc).
- Show photos that tell a story and that stand on its own
I felt that most of my shots from the day suffered from some of these due to my shooting location in relationship to most of the action on the field.

Although the images that I’ve posted in this post are decent (focus on, color decent, focus mostly good) most of them suffer from background or foreground distractions and lack of emotion/story.
