Older Tiffs - what to do with them

I have a bunch of 8 bit Tiff files from several years ago. These were slides I had scanned, either myself or through a local lab. I'm pretty sure they aren't the original scans, because some have a border (I had done that for making prints) and others do not and the "print size" is on the order of 10"x12" or 20"x24". I honestly don't know where the original scans could be.:dunno

I want to re-edit them and such. I'm just wonder what's the best way to do this. If I should get them re-scanned into a higher bit, higher resolution or different format. Is Tiff the "best" format for scanned slides? Is there a RAW format for scanned slides? I basically want to get these to an "original" digital state, meaning something I can them move on from with edits. Can I do that from what I've got? These definitely have had some editing done to them before, I just don't remember exactly what's been done to them.

Or should I just leave these alone and just start re-editing with these or copies of these?

I'm a bit confused as to what to do with these next? any input, advice or suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks.
