Ed - It works on my machine (I've always wanted to say that).

Seriously, it works for me here in Firefox 3. I see the favicon just fine. (correction - it does not show up in IE 6, but it does show up in Firefox)

What OS and what browser are you using?

    Mike.

Whether it will work at all depends on your browser. Per the answer to # 42 in http://www.smugmug.com/help/customize-faq, favicon doesn't work well (if at all) on IE.

I mentioned this once before but no one answered --- why is it that we have to blame I.E. for the inconsistent favicons -- yet Smugmug doesn't have any issues with the smuggie showing up "all the time""?? Can someone please answer that??? It would seem that if it was I.E. I wouldn't get the smuggie face 100% of the time in I.E.headscratch.gif

The answer to the question about IE is that changing the favicon is a "hack". It is not an officially supported Smugmug feature. It's something that some people figured out how to do by adding some HTML to one of the customization fields. The hack only works in browsers that allow you to specify more than one favicon and have the last one be the one that actually shows because there is no customization field that lets you put HTML in front of the Smugmug favicon declaration or change the Smugmug fav icon declaration. The hack appears to work in Firefox, but not in IE or in Safari (in my brief testing).

If it were to be an "officially supported" feature, then Smugmug would have to allow you to specify what you wanted to use for the one and only one favicon declaration in the page. They do not currently offer that feature.

    Hey John,

That is exactly what I was trying to get at. Everyone is blaming I.E., --- it's not I.E. Smugmug is putting themselves in a position of being number one and blaming I.E. when their members attempt to express themselves and wonder why it doesn't work. Dozens of pages on this forum blame I.E. when smugmug could just as easily have said, "Hey guys it's not what you're doing that's wrong, it's us who want to take top billing." Just because other browsers allow the hack doesn't necessarily mean I.E. is to blame like smugmug professes from the mountain tops (or the worst program ever like Andy expressed)-- it could just means that I.E. is written well enough not to accept hacks. I don't have the knowledge of people like John --- but it wasn't that hard to figure out and I would think other members could have seen this as well. Thanks for your input John.

You can "blame" Smugmug if you want. It's just not a feature that Smugmug offers. I don't call that "blame". Feel free to file this as a feature request on the feature request thread for "official Smugmug support" of this feature if you want.

A proper, unbiased explanation would be: "Favicons are not an official Smugmug feature. A hack has been figured out for Firefox, but nobody has figured one out for IE yet because IE is not as flexible in this regard as Firefox is."

    Hey John,

I am not blaming smugmug per se. I am only saying that instead of blaming I.E. over and over again ( . . . . because IE is the worst browser ever made on the planet. Other browsers handle favicon changes just fine, . . . . blame Microsoft . . . . . direct quotes from Andy) smugmug could just as easily have said we don't offer this feature.

John, your "unbiased explanation" was excellent but it should have come from smugmug. It would have been more palatible than the damning of I.E. that was so pervasive on the forum.

Smugmug offers much for the dollar -- they just could have been more upfront about this issue and explained it in real terms not in terms of continually blaming I.E. for something they don't want to offer at this time.

See all the people (not from SmugMug) who have similar problems http://www.google.com/search?q=favicon+ie+problem&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&aq=t&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&client=firefox-a
